Finding things to do in Exeter with teenagers is trickier than it sounds. Too old for soft play, too young to just be left to it, and heaven forbid you suggest anything that involves putting the phone down.
So when I was invited along to .uk to check out their gaming café, I said yes without hesitation. We went along for a few hours after school on a Friday and it turned out to be exactly the screen-free bonding session I didn’t know we needed.
The place has that instantly welcoming, slightly geeky charm; exposed brick, cosy booths, and shelves stacked floor to ceiling with games. They’re celebrating 10 years in Exeter this year, and it shows in how well they’ve got the formula down.
We played Unstoppable Unicorns (brilliantly sneaky, all about building an army while sabotaging everyone else’s), a round of the chaos that is Muffin Time, and Scrawl, which had all of us in stitches trying to guess each other’s terrible drawings. Staff talked us through anything new and clearly know their library inside out.
Food-wise: think burgers, loaded fries, Southern fried chicken wraps, grilled cheese, falafel wraps, chickpea curry, solid burgers, and milkshakes in flavours from salted caramel to peanut butter.
Sitting across a table from your teenager, both of you laughing over a game (with the inevitable teenage sibling bickering), just doesn’t happen in front of a screen. Low-pressure, fun, and gives you a reason to talk that isn’t “how was school.” Safe to say we’ll be back.
