Before Nick & Nora’s was a bar, the names belonged to one of fiction’s most glamorous couples.
Created by author Dashiell Hammett for his 1934 novel The Thin Man, Nick and Nora Charles made their big-screen debut later that same year, played by William Powell and Myrna Loy.
Nick was a retired private detective. Nora was a wealthy heiress with a sharp wit and an appetite for adventure. Together, they solved mysteries, traded perfectly timed remarks and moved through a world of elegant parties, plentiful cocktails and wonderfully questionable characters—usually with their dog, Asta, close behind.
They were sophisticated without being stuffy, glamorous without taking themselves too seriously, and rarely allowed a murder investigation to interfere with a well-made Martini.
Here’s a little trivia: Nick wasn’t actually “the Thin Man.” The title originally referred to the missing man at the centre of the first mystery, but it became so closely associated with Nick and Nora that it followed them through six films.
Their world inspired both the name and the spirit of Nick & Nora’s: generous hospitality, flowing Champagne, beautifully made cocktails, a sense of occasion and always a little mischief.
And the connection runs deeper than the name. Listen closely while exploring the venue and you may even hear dialogue from the original films playing behind the scenes.
