Witchcraft and craft cocktails have a lot more in common than you might think! 🥂

Herbs, roots, flowers, fruits, and spices have been used for centuries in medicine, magick, and spirits. We love exploring how the same ingredient can bring something wonderful to a cocktail’s flavor while carrying a completely different meaning in spellwork.

It’s a little bit of botany, a little bit of alchemy, and a whole lot of delicious witchcraft. 🖤

And while we’re witches all year round, October is a pretty wonderful time to celebrate with the real thing. 🕯️

📕 Did you know we have a witchcraft library in the bar? Yes, and you can check out books while you visit anytime on Wednesday, Thursday, or Sunday.

Most of them are from my personal collection (Zoey.) There's books on spell work, different forms of ritual practice, and lots on protection and divination.

🕯️✨ You are your own tarot reader at The Black Salt. From the day we opened, we put together a wonderful collection of tarot decks that are available for rent any day you visit the bar.

Whether you have never read tarot before in your life, or read on a daily basis, we have a deck for you. From oracle decks with beautiful symbolism to a wide array of traditional tarot decks, we even have a deck that has the meanings like cheat codes on the actual card. It's really not that hard, you just have to be open and ask the cards your questions, then pull. ❤️

🥃 Old Forester Bourbon
Strength, warmth, and prosperity.

🥃 Planteray Dark Rum and El Dorado 12 Year Rum
Abundance, pleasure, and good fortune.

Herbal bitterness for balance and reflection.

Hazelnut for wisdom and protection.

Harvest abundance, nourishment, and gratitude.

✨ The Spell ✨
When we began discussing fall spells, one of the first ideas our team suggested was a spell to combat distractions. We decided that scent is a powerful tool for grounding and remaining present. The resulting spell uses a cedar stick, rooster feather and larvikite to create a talisman for anchoring your attention in the present.

🎃Every season, we enjoy the challenge of slipping pumpkin into a cocktail on the menu, and this one does not disappoint! Come in and leave distractions behind. You deserve to enjoy this fall.

🔥Our bathroom chandeliers had a little update this week. They were in need of some new bulbs and what's better than a little flicker? 🕯️

✨We have two bathrooms, and each one has a chandelier from the old bar, Mephisto's. They strangely fit the vibe perfectly.

🪞 Every time I tweak and update something in the bar, it seems to lead to another project. I see new gaudy Victorian mirrors in the future. And with the dim candle light, we will need picture lights over the mirrors to be able to check our makeup. 💄

🗝️ The Cellar 🗝️ A cocktail and spell for managing and protecting your wealth.

Cellars have traditionally been places of preparation and keeping. A place to store the harvest, preserve food, organize provisions, and make sure what was gathered could sustain you through the winter.

We do a lot of money spells for attracting more wealth and abundance. But what if the answer isn’t always more? Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is manage and protect what we already have.

🥃 The Cocktail 🥃

🧈 Brown Butter Rum
Fat washed in house. Rum is used for prosperity, abundance, and good fortune. Butter represents nourishment, richness, and having enough.

🌲 Roasted Pine Nut Orgeat
Made in house with roasted pine nuts. Pine is associated with prosperity, resilience, protection, and endurance.

🍊 Grapefruit
Used for cleansing and clearing stagnant energy.

🍋‍🟩 Lime
Cleansing and protective. Used to clear away what is no longer serving us.

🤎 Cinnamon
Used in money magick for prosperity, success, and drawing wealth.

✨ The Spell ✨

A money spell focused on protecting and managing your resources as we move into the colder months.

🍚 Rice for abundance, prosperity, and having enough.

🐅 Tiger’s Eye for prosperity, confidence, and making practical decisions around money.

🌰 An acorn for potential, patience, saving for the future, and allowing something small to grow over time.

🗝️ A key for protecting what you have and taking control of your resources.

Not every money spell needs to ask for more.

Sometimes the magick is taking inventory, protecting what you have, and using it wisely. 🗝️

🎃 This week begins the fourth October at The Black Salt. My fifth, technically, since becoming a steward of this building.

When I opened the bar in 2023, I did it on a shoestring. I had spent a year restoring the building and the bar, and was under pressure to open as soon as humanly possible. There was a baby in my belly, my feet were swollen, and I was limited by finances. In retrospect, I'm so glad it forced me to wait.

Since then, I’ve have gradually worked on the space — maintaining it, improving it, changing the lighting, moving furniture, adding artwork, refinishing and building things, and slowly completing the pieces I couldn’t afford or didn’t have time to finish when we opened. It has given me time to think deeply about how the space can be preserved and also enhanced tastefully. Of course, intention is always a big part of my work, and that shines through every part of the bar.

Many things in the bar have histories of their own. Our stained glass shadow boxes, for example, are made from salvaged leaded-glass windows from old Detroit homes. Other pieces I’ve built or made specifically for the space. Each improvement made thoughtfully. Sometimes waiting for the right resources to appear.

I spend a huge part of my life at The Black Salt. My daughter is growing up here. It’s where I work, make things, experiment, and where an enormous amount of my creative energy has been invested.

October has always felt like the high point of the year here. The bar is at its busiest, and suddenly the spells, cocktails, candles and witchcraft that are part of our everyday world exist within a season. We are witches all year round, by the way. 😘

I’m very proud to be heading into our fourth October.

For everyone who comes back to see us year after year, thank you. And for everyone walking through our doors for the first time this month, we’re excited to have you.

Black cats at the door. Cocktails in the dark. A little music, a little spellwork, and a night devoted to all the beautiful things we were once told to fear.

The Black Cat Party returns Friday, November 13th. 🐈‍⬛

Friday has long belonged to Venus — love, beauty, femininity, pleasure. And 13 carries associations with lunar cycles, the body, transformation and the Divine Feminine.

Somewhere along the way, these things became omens. Witches became wicked. Black cats became unlucky. Friday the 13th became something to fear.

We prefer reclamation.

So we celebrate the black cat: familiar, night wanderer, little creature of mystery — and very much deserving of our love.

At The Black Salt, magick is meant to be something you get to play with, explore, and make your own.

Our spells are built from more than twenty years of working with ritual, consciousness, intention, symbolism, folklore, and the natural world — but you don’t need any of that experience to enjoy one.

You just need a little curiosity.

Each spell begins with ingredients chosen for a reason. Herbs, flowers, fruits, woods, salts, stones, resins and other pieces of the season find their way into our work according to their traditional correspondences, their stories, and the way they feel within the particular moment of the year.

We approach them much the same way we approach a cocktail.

What is growing right now?
What is fading?
What feels warm, protective, abundant, cleansing, romantic, grounding, strange?

Then we gather the pieces, make everything by hand, and leave the last part to you.

Because the most important ingredient is never something we can put in the bag.

It’s your intention.
