Club Q’s Permanent Memorial Honoring Victims of November 19, 2022 Tragedy
Colorado Springs, CO

Club Q has been moving forward with the creation of a permanent memorial to honor the five lives lost in the tragic mass shooting that occurred on November 19, 2022. After 18 months of careful planning and community collaboration, the City of Colorado Springs approved the conversion of a portion of Club Q’s parking lot into a permanent space of remembrance.

In time for the two-year remembrance five twelve-foot columns were built —each representing one of the five victims. These columns are more than architectural features; they are sacred markers of lives lost, stories remembered, and a community forever changed. Each column is made of solid concrete and is a blank canvas.

At the November two year memorial service families of the victims viewed the new columns. During private conversations, each family expressed their wish to see their loved one’s name and photo added to the respective column. Families were aware that the big pictures were becoming weather worn and since temporary in nature would be removed at some point. Club Q has publicly and privately committed that each column belongs to the victim’s family to decorate and personalize as they wish. Several of the families expressed design ideas.

In response, Club Q has issued an open call to local artists who would like to collaborate directly with one of the families to bring their vision to life. This community-driven approach ensures that the memorial remains a living, breathing tribute—deeply personal and created with love.

Club Q also acknowledges that the removal of the temporary photographs—placed shortly after the tragedy—has caused pain and concern among some in the community. These photos were a vital and powerful part of the grieving process, and their absence is deeply felt. The transition from temporary to permanent is not taken lightly. Club Q remains steadfast in its commitment that the lives lost on November 19, 2022, will never be forgotten and the five permanent columns will always serve to remember the individuals that lost their lives that tragic evening.

“The events of that night are still vivid in all of our minds” said a Club Q owner, Matthew Haynes. “This permanent memorial is a space for mourning, for healing, and most of all, for remembering. Club Q continues to honor that promise made in the earliest days after the shooting: that there would be a permanent memorial that will always carry the memory of those we lost.”

Club Q invites all members of the community to join in supporting the memorial’s development and to participate in the ongoing efforts to ensure it reflects the love, resilience, and diversity that define the Club Q family.

We hope everyone can join us at Club Q on Tuesday November 19th, 2024 from 7PM to 8PM for a candlelight vigil to remember those we lost two years ago, honor survivors and support the impacted community.

Following that, we will gather at Club Q’s sister bar and lounge The Q located inside the Satellite Hotel for a Night of Resilience and Strength.

We will soon be closing orders for dedication bricks that will be installed at Club Q's permament memorial to honor the victims of the shooting on 11/19/22. We have begun the construction of the memorial with the installation of the flag pole, which features an 8x12 foot progress pride flag. We are grateful for the partnership with Fundraising Brick. Hello everyone, we want to take some time to support our friends at . If you haven’t heard, there was a fire in the building which they are located which has forced them to suddenly shut down, unlikely to open until January. We are asking for you to show them the same support you’ve shown us all year long, and help support their staff while they are closed. We are all in this together. ❤️

Club Q Announces Future Plans

An excerpt:

"Over the last 11 months we have heard the
perspectives of survivors, victims’ families and the
greater community. The voices are overwhelmingly
strong, Club Q must return – when and where has been
the main debate. We have heard those that feel
returning the building to the community this soon will
hinder their healing process.

We fully recognize that Club Q and this community has
never been a building or location. It’s composed of
tens of thousands of people of all walks of life coming
together to celebrate love and acceptance. This Club
Q community has continued to carry on with strength
and resilience, even while the doors have remained
closed.
At this time, we have decided not to open Club Q in its
old location. We believe the best way forward is for
Club Q to initially open a new venue at a new location.
The new venue will be known as The Q and will be
located inside the historic Satellite Hotel in southern
Colorado Springs at 411 Lakewood Circle, Colorado
Springs, Colorado 80910. We will never be able to
make those impacted by the shooting at Club Q whole,
but we hope this new space can provide community
healing. We all have changed in so many ways, but we
sincerely hope that the new venue can be a small part
of rebuilding the Colorado Springs LGBTQ+
community.

Safe venues are still very important. Transgender
people are being attacked and legislated against
throughout the country and the art of drag is under
attack as grooming. The Q, in the tradition of Club Q,
will stand up to these attacks. We will provide a safe,
affirming and inclusive space to everyone. The new
venue will host a variety of shows, including drag
shows. We will also proudly present alternative
entertainment options, such as karaoke, bingo, trivia,
and arcade style video games.
We have experienced many frustrating delays with the
design and approval process for Club Q’s onsite
permanent memorial. We are pleased to announce we
are in the final approval process and intend to begin
construction very soon. Our goal is to complete the
memorial as expeditiously as possible."
