There’s something perverse about grieving in a room built for pleasure.
The music doesn’t soften out of respect.
The bottles make no distinction.
Joy and sorrow drink from the same glass;
And yet, grief doesn’t pay the bills.
It clocks in.
It ties an apron.
It wipes down the bar.
It smiles just enough to keep the room alive.
Because we belong to the night.
Not because it conceals us –
But because it refuses to.
Darkness has that way of peeling away the performance until only the raw remains.
It’s a strange mercy:
The same hand that steadies you, also pours another.
The remedy feeds the wound.
The wound justifies the remedy.
Routine becomes crutch and cast.
People think healing is a sunrise.
Sometimes it’s closing the bar at 4am,
realizing the weight is just a little less than what you walked in with.
Still –
The horizon doesn’t care how slowly you reach it.
You just gotta keep dancing.
Not in defiance.
Not in denial.
Not because we’re unbroken –
because somewhere between the music, the shots, the laughs that almost seem real, and the silence waiting outside…
another small piece of the debt has been paid.
And we’re one step closer.
