NASA image captured by Artemis II's Orion spacecraft at 41,756 miles altitude, revealing a stunning crescent Earth above space, the first complete human view from this angle since Apollo 17 in 1972.

Artemis II blasted off April 1, 2026, with crew Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen on a 10-day Moon flyby mission, now in high Earth orbit after a critical perigee boost burn.

A Prism Spilling Across the Sea

This likely occurred along Florida’s Atlantic shore, in late daylight, as a storm cell kept raining offshore and the Sun broke out behind the lens.

That broad arc is a rainbow: sunlight passes into raindrops, bounces within, and returns split into colors. The “upright color veils” beneath it follow the same effect, but pulled long by a narrow rain shaft and ocean mist: the light is moving through a dense sheet of falling rain, so the spectrum looks like it’s flowing downward instead of making one sharp band.

The golden light across the clouds is the final sunlight touching their highest rims, while the deeper blue below it comes from heavier rain and shadow underneath.

A Truly Rare Once Only Frame. 🌠💫

"I’d only been aiming for a sharp galactic shot," says photographer Elias Thorne, still thrilled after a night in Oregon’s high desert.

Elias had walked for three hours deep into the isolated wilds of the Alvord Desert, chasing absolute darkness and an open look at the Milky Way climbing above a lone outline. He placed his tripod, fine-tuned his camera, and left the shutter open for a long exposure, expecting the familiar: hazy nebulae and a field of ancient stars.

Then, the heavens tore apart.

An enormous fireball meteor ripped through the scene, leaving a bright green and orange trail as it broke up in the air. It flashed by so quickly Elias barely caught it with his own eyes, but his camera captured each brilliant instant.

"In a decade of astrophotography, I’ve never witnessed anything like this," Elias said. "You can prepare for the place, the equipment, and the conditions, but you can’t prepare for the universe choosing to put on a show."

A real burst of cosmic fortune where the timing felt just as flawless as the framing.

The heavens lit up in flames .. then cast a rainbow
It unfolded at dusk along the Oregon shore, when the storm’s edge eased away and the final glow struck the clouds from below.

Those rich crimson tones appear when the low sun pushes through more of the atmosphere at sunset, so the warmer hues take over. Then, with rain still lingering far off, that same sunlight hit the droplets at just the right angle and built a rainbow arc, vivid enough to slice through the gloom like a painted edge.
Why it feels so powerful: two layers at the same time, storm shade above, sunset glow below, and just enough rain remaining to create color.

Places you can spot views like this in the USA:

Oregon and Washington shorelines, quickly shifting weather + dramatic sunsets.

Northern California shore, marine layer opens after rain
Florida and the Gulf Coast, sunshowers close to sunset
Best time: right after a brief shower, within the final 10–15 minutes of daylight.

The tempest set the peak aglow with electricity

It seems as if the heavens drew stage drapes…

One bolt, one beat, and the clouds begin glowing with shades that feel unreal...like aurora got caught inside a storm.

This effect can appear as evening sunlight passes through deep storm bands while the cloud margins spread it into shifting tones. Add lightning, and you get a brief burst that ignites ice-filled cloud tops and rain sheets from within...so the storm reveals its layers: solid core, thinner veil, glowing bright edge.

A Spectrum Glow At Dusk

It unfolded on a peaceful strip of the Florida Gulf Coast, right as the Sun met the horizon and the waterline became a perfect reflection.

The vivid hues seem like a canvas, but the core reason behind it is very clear: sunlight + moisture + thin cloud layers.

At dusk, the glow moves through extra atmosphere, becoming warmer and richer. When it slips through fine ocean mist and layered clouds, the light can spread and divide into soft color tones, and the wet shore throws everything back, so the beach shines like it’s carrying the colors.

Where these vivid sunset skies appear best in the USA:

Florida Gulf Coast (Destin, Sarasota, Naples area)

California coast (Laguna Beach to Monterey Bay)

Cape Hatteras, NC

Hawaiʻi (shores with mist and quick-shifting skies)

Best timing: final 5 to 15 minutes before sunset, especially after humid days when the air looks hazy and clouds look layered.
