One can only imagine what it was like on that fateful morning of April 18th, 1906 when the Great Earthquake hit San Francisco and the Great Fire began to destroy it. The city had already burned down a number of times in the previous 50 years, yet still there was lots of shoddy construction, loads of brick fireplaces that kept homes warm, which crumbled and released their embers all over the city. The mayor illegally enforced a shoot to kill policy for looters and the corrupt. It was madness that lasted for days.

120 years ago the city burned down including the original saloon at 3200 16th Street. But that didn't stop this guy. Patrick J. McGinnis owned the saloon from 1893 to the day it burned down in 1906, and he immediately went to work with famed architect Brainerd Jones designing the building that would replace his saloon. He then went on to run it right through World War I, the Spanish Flu, The Great Depression, and even Prohibition, running it as a soft drink parlor until the end when he sold it to another Irishman.

So as part of our recognition of 120 years since the horrible disaster began, we honor PJ McGinnis with $5 off any size Frozen Irish Coffee all weekend!

And don't forget about our Golden Hydrant cocktails on draft that honor the fire plug that put out the fires in our end of the city by donating $2 of every drink sold to the San Francisco Fire Department. We'll talk about that tomorrow...

It was a pretty phenomenal pre-St. Patrick's Day between the San Francisco Classics cocktail class at 12:00 p.m., the first annual Irish Whiskey Festival (which was a sell-out), and everyone who came through after we opened to the public at 7:00.
