Ingredient of the week: Blue Curaço. The story of Blue Curaçao originates on the Caribbean island of Curaçao, where 16th-century Spanish settlers planted Valencia orange trees that failed to thrive in the arid, nutrient-poor soil; the trees instead mutated into a distinctly bitter, unpalatable sub-species known as the Laraha orange. When dried, the peels of the Laraha released extraordinarily aromatic essential oils rich in limonene and myrcene, leading local distillers (most notably the Senior family in the late 19th century) to macerate the peels in spirit to produce a clear, orange-flavored liqueur.

From a mixological standpoint, its chemical interaction with other ingredients is striking: because Blue Curaçao absorbs red and green light wavelengths while transmitting blue, mixing it with yellow juices (such as pineapple or orange juice containing carotenoid pigments) yields a vibrant green, as seen in classic tiki cocktails like the Swimming Pool or Blue Hawaiian, making it a foundational tool for visual layering and color theory in mixology.
