Hey friends, owner Logan here. Last Friday, September 25th, a truly beloved member of our Elk St. / Redlight family, Cole Strickland, passed away unexpectedly at his home.

Cole came to us in the summer of 2023 to help open Redlight on Grand Ave, and was an immediate, steady presence in a brand new kitchen trying to feed a real, grown-up restaurant in a way we never had. He thrived there for two years, but my guess is it only took a couple hours for everyone to love him. He moved to Elk St. when we opened last summer, in large part to help us establish how our kitchens operate, with kindness, respect and humility, all of which he seemed to have extra on hand. It didn’t hurt that he could cook exceptionally well, but he was that much better at just being a person.

I won’t lie, today we have two restaurants that are in shambles. We’ve lost our dear friend and colleague, and an amazing family has lost a beloved son and brother. This is a world that only needs more Coles, and it lost one, and that will never be okay. So please tell your people that you love them, that you’re on their side, and that who they are is exactly who you want them to be. It doesn’t matter if you already did today, you can annoy them with it. Because it’s very clear to me now, that if grief is just love we never got to show someone, there is so very much left for him here.

Cole’s family has asked that, if you’re willing and able, to donate to a campaign in Cole’s name to benefit NAMI Whatcom. The link for that is in our bio.

Please take care of yourselves, and take care of each other. Rest easy, pal. We love you today, and we always will.
