BANISHED MUSIC Strange Universe Winter kicks off tonight with a very special first-time visit from Cass McCombs — Tuesday 26 May at Double Whammy.

Recently described by The Guardian as operating “at the highest songwriting level”, the celebrated American indie favourite is a true songwriter’s songwriter. More than a dozen albums deep, McCombs has built a catalogue of timeless earworms including Brighter!, Bum Bum Bum and Absentee, while recent album Interior Live Oak saw Pitchfork praise an artist still “in top form”.

Joined by his killer quartet, this one-off Auckland show marks the very first time McCombs has performed in Aotearoa.

A stacked week across Whammy and Double Whammy, spanning indie folk and death metal from the USA through to Australian “bogan funk,” plus local punk, post-punk, hip hop, soul, goth rock and club-heavy nights.

There are free entry shows scattered through the week. Friday celebrates the best of the best in Aotearoa Hip Hop, Soul and Electronic genres, and Sunday celebrates the King’s Birthday with a late-night industrial rave.

Big weekend incoming! Tonight/Friday experience the lush grooves of Sola Rosa and his new show with full AV production in Double Whammy! Whammy is hosting two shows: razor-sharp indie from Caitlin starting at 7PM, and late-night bass with Bass Rongoā TUATORU from 11PM.

A stacked Saturday features one of Aotearoa’s most respected rappers, Diggy Dupé, back for his first headline show in Tāmaki Makaurau in nearly four years at Double Whammy! Meanwhile, Whammy hosts Tāmaki rockers Clap Clap Riot for their first show in seven years.

Two rooms, five massive shows, and some of the best live acts in Aotearoa.
