An hour reserved for experimentation; Shelter Lab runs Tuesday through Saturday from 5–6pm and is our excuse to play around a little. Pick a spirit, a flavour profile, and a technique, then let the team build something around it.

It’s a chance to try something new, discover a combination you didn’t know you liked, and see what our bartenders have been working on lately.

On May 15, a serious incident inside Shelter resulted in several members of our team being assaulted while protecting guests and attempting to de-escalate the situation.

The past few days have been difficult, but also deeply reassuring in seeing the amount of support shown toward our staff, especially Chef Rich McLaren during his recovery.

We’re proud of our team, grateful to the guests who stepped in to help, and thankful to Calgary Police for their quick response.

Shelter has officially been awarded 1 PIN by The Pinnacle Guide, becoming the first bar in Calgary to receive the recognition.

The Pinnacle Guide recognizes bars globally for excellence across hospitality, drinks, operations, atmosphere, and the overall guest experience.

Massive thank you to our bar team, the people behind the late nights, menu development, polishing glasses, endless prep lists, quiet consistency, and the constant pursuit of making things just a little bit better every service. This recognition is a reflection of the care, creativity, and effort the team pours into the room every single night.

Still pouring: the BEET & BOURBON.

Originally introduced as a part of Menu XX, the cocktail has now survived consecutive menu changes following its continued popularity at the bar, becoming one of the defining drinks of the current era at Shelter.

Built with Buffalo Trace bourbon, Cynar, Strega, tamarind, lemon, beet, and soursop, the profile leans oaky and bittersweet, layered with earthy depth and subtle tropical undertones beneath the surface.

Dark, textured, and just restrained enough, it’s a cocktail that continues to find its way back onto tables night after night. Some drinks rotate out. Some earn their place. Try one on the patio this week.

A few weeks of 50 Best, Canada’s 100 Best, flights, events, late nights, and generally running around the country talking about cocktails and now we’re back where we belong.

Business as usual at Shelter Cocktail Bar: award-winning drinks, low lighting, good music, and the kind of classics that somehow never leave the rotation.

Come by for a favourite from the current menu, or settle into one of Shelter’s longtime staples while spring finally starts figuring itself out.

We’re very excited and proud to share that Shelter Cocktail Bar has landed at #20 on Canada’s 50 Best Bars, which means a great deal to our team, and to a small room that’s always aimed to do things with a love, care, and intention.

A special moment as well for Ryan , who was awarded the Innovator Award built on Paulina’s discovery of implementing active aroma compounds into our cocktails. It’s an area we’ve been exploring and refining, shaping how we think about flavour, balance, and the way a drink is experienced from the first moment to the last.
