SUNDAY LIVE with Ndu Shezi (Live at the Basement)

A soulful Sunday session. Love songs, gospel, new music, and surprise collaborations — all under one roof.

Ndu Shezi () is one of South Africa’s most soulful and distinctive voices — a SAMA-nominated artist whose debut album Isibusiso Sami announced her as a singular presence in the African adult contemporary space. Now she returns to the stage with something intimate, generous, and entirely her own.

This Sunday session is a musical journey that moves between love songs and gospel, between the familiar and the new — curated by Ndu herself as an act of offering to her audience. Expect the warmth of revisited favourites alongside the thrill of new music being presented live for the very first time.

She’ll be joined by a handpicked selection of surprise guests — collaborators drawn from across the South African music landscape — borrowing from old sounds and merging them with current flavours to celebrate the richness of what this country produces. The result is an evening that uplifts, serenades, and inspires.

Come ready to be moved. Sunday at the Basement will not be ordinary.

Nduduzo Makhathini Presents: The Myth We choose “Exclusive Album Performance, talk and Vinyl signing”

The Myth We Choose has to be the most anticipated Blue Note Records album from Nduduzo Makhathini. On this project Makhathini breaks so many boundaries.

Songs are vital to a culture’s myth-making, Makhathini argues, which makes them essential to how future generations perceive history. “I have always felt that songs speak to us, songs look at us,” he writes in the album’s liner notes. “In years to come, it will be the histories of the day that will choose or not choose our songs. If our songs are not chosen, then our voices would never be heard…

On the contrary, if our songs are chosen, then indeed, what we are dealing with now is designing future myths. With our actions today, we are making suggestions for what tomorrow may be.”

Before this epic record lands on the 26th of June, Makhathini is embarking on an exclusive South African tour in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban to perform this album live, give a talk and sign vinyls. This will feature his trio with Dalisu Ndlazi on double Bass and Kabelo Mokhatla on drums. For these concerts Makhathini will also feature special guests such as Omagugu, Thando Zide and Muneyi.

[[20 June]] Mo Molemi’s “Motswako Black Tie”

Dress up, show up, for a night of heritage, rhythm, and celebration.

Motswako Black Tie is a celebration of a movement that reshaped South African hip hop. This is over two decades of Setswana lyricism, storytelling, and township philosophy that gave an entire generation a language to see itself in.

At the centre of the evening is Mo’Molemi, who is widely regarded as one of the movement’s most respected lyricists and architects.

For one night only, audiences will experience Mo’Molemi in a rare live band format reimagining classic records and deep cuts with warmth, texture, and musical depth.

Expect an immersive performance that moves between nostalgia and reinvention.

Untitled Basement Presents Nomfundo Xaluva
NDILAPHA: Live at the Basement

After an unforgettable sold-out performance and a remarkable run of major appearances celebrating her acclaimed new album Ndilapha, multi-award-winning vocalist, composer, and scholar Nomfundo Xaluva returns to Untitled Basement for what promises to be another deeply moving and unforgettable evening of music.

The excitement surrounding Nomfundo’s return to Johannesburg has been immense. For many local audiences, opportunities to experience the Cape Town-based artist in an intimate live setting are rare — making this moment especially significant for lovers of South African jazz and contemporary African music.

Over the years, Nomfundo has established herself as one of the most distinctive and important voices in South African music. Her work moves effortlessly between jazz, African indigenous music, classical influence, and deeply personal storytelling — creating performances that are spiritually rich, emotionally layered, and sonically fearless.

Whether through her celebrated albums Kusile, From.Now.On, or her latest award-winning body of work Ndilapha, Nomfundo continues to push the boundaries of South African jazz while remaining deeply rooted in heritage, language, and memory. Her music honours the legacy of greats such as Miriam Makeba and Winston Mankunku Ngozi, while simultaneously shaping a bold and contemporary African sound of her own.

A two-time Metro FM Music Award winner, recipient of the NIHSS Award for Best Composition/Arrangement, senior lecturer at UCT’s South African College of Music, published scholar, and internationally respected performer, Nomfundo stands at the rare intersection of artistic brilliance, intellectual depth, and cultural preservation.

But beyond the accolades, it is her live performances that continue to draw audiences closer to her world. There is an honesty, vulnerability, and exploratory spirit in the way she performs that makes every show feel deeply personal and impossible to replicate.

Untitled Basement Presents: The Twin Flame Duet Series

We’re proud to introduce The Twin Flame Duet Series — an exclusive and limited live music experience bringing together dream artist pairings for rare, once-in-a-lifetime collaborative performances.

The series creates space for audiences to encounter artists in intimate, reimagined formats — where unlikely pairings, shared histories, and deeply connected sonic worlds meet on stage in powerful conversation.

We begin this journey with a truly profound meeting of generations and spirit:

IHAMBO YENGOMA
with Andile Yenana & Dumza Maswana

Ihambo Yengoma is more than a performance — it is a deeply spiritual musical dialogue between two important voices in South African jazz and indigenous music: legendary pianist, composer, and cultural thinker Andile Yenana, alongside acclaimed baritone vocalist, songwriter, and uhadi practitioner Dumza Maswana.

For decades, Andile Yenana has stood as one of the great architects of contemporary African jazz — creating music that is meditative, intellectually rich, spiritually grounded, and deeply connected to African identity and memory. Dumza Maswana, whose work draws from isiXhosa oral tradition, indigenous song, jazz, and storytelling, has become one of the most important cultural voices carrying heritage into the present through sound.

Their connection is longstanding and deeply organic. Yenana produced Maswana’s celebrated album Celebrating African Song, and together they have shared stages at some of the country’s most important cultural platforms, including the National Arts Festival and the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz.

Through piano, uhadi, voice, and ancestral rhythm, Ihambo Yengoma becomes a journey into memory, healing, ancestry, and homecoming — where indigenous music traditions and contemporary African jazz meet in breathtaking conversation.

Rooted in the spirit of umngqungqo, this performance honours the preservation and evolution of African musical expression while offering audiences something increasingly rare: music that is honest, sacred, deeply human, and spiritually moving.
