Noni Camagwini Ntaka’s Brain Child.

Its almost a rarity that a great story is not rooted in deep passion and strife, the story of Isizwe Music Museum is no different but certainly unique. Founded in the late 90’s by Noni Camagwini Ntaka, Isizwe’s story did not begin there but way back in the dark ages of a divided South Africa where a young girl found herself growing up without her father even though he was alive and fully present. Mr Blues Ntaka was a prominent living legend in the music sphere of South Africa and the world during the apartheid era and his life work speaks no differently. Having been separated from his family and homeland by the inequalities of the struggle, he had to be exiled to ensure he lives but that left an imminent longing for the understanding of music in his daughters life.

Noni Ntaka grew and with that so did her will power to learn and be the best at what she does , she learned from the best after all. She acquired a diploma in entertainment technology from Rand Afrikaans University and another one in media studies from the University of the Witwatersrand respectively. All this passion to learn had an underlying tone that questioned why only certain musicians get recognition and praise while the spectrum is broad and diverse, equally deserving of accreditation. This is where her idea to erect a monument that honours unsung musicians and African musical art forms was birthed. She traveled the length and width of the mother continent in efforts to broaden her knowledge of African sounds, learned about different cultures and ultimately saw the need for a museum that encapsulates the essence of the African spirit, Music. The museum is also an exhibition site for indigenous musical instruments and events. The Isizwe museum oozes artistic energy and character, with all the rooms themed according to musical instruments. Every one who has ever been here finds themselves inspired to listen more to what is not mainstream but to embrace the diversity of African music. When asked what it is that she wants the existence of this musical haven to achieve she vehemently said “ There are some musicians who made names for themselves , but were never popular in terms of public support. They were not fortunate like Miriam Makeba or Caiphus Semenya, we want future generations to know them and what instruments they were using in those days”.
