The pairing is inspired by the cult film Sideways where Miles, the main character, spends the whole film disparaging Merlot.

In reality it was not about his disdain for the grape but that Merlot was his ex-wife’s favorite wine.

Miles was projecting his heartbreak onto the grape.

His viral line “I’m not drinking any f$% Merlot” had real-world implications—over 7,000 acres of Merlot were replanted in California, costing farmers an estimated $400 million.

Ironically, in the final scene of the movie, Miles finally drinks his prized 1961 Château Cheval Blanc—a Merlot—in a Styrofoam cup…while eating a burger and onion rings from a fast food joint.
