A new Dominican restaurant is bringing fresh energy to downtown Waukegan.

El Patio Cafe & Lounge opened in July on Genesee Street, offering Dominican favorites like empanadas, yaroa, mangú and chimi, along with coffee, smoothies and other beverages. The restaurant is also home to a unique bicycle-powered blender.

Owner Elinelsy Castillo said she saw an opportunity to bring something new to Waukegan, noting, “There is no Dominican restaurant in Waukegan.”

The restaurant is part of the revitalization of a historic downtown building that had been vacant for several years. Developer Mikki Schuck said, “We’re bringing life back to downtown Waukegan.”

Eleven months ago, we found this space and saw the potential to create something special. Our original vision was to open a coffee shop, but as the journey unfolded, we realized the space had room for so much more. That’s when we decided to bring authentic Dominican cuisine to Lake County alongside our passion for coffee.

Today, El Patio is a coffee shop with a menu full of Dominican flavors. Most of our dishes are prepared fresh when you place your order because we believe homemade food is worth the wait.

We want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported us throughout this journey. Every visit, every review, every recommendation, every share, and every word of encouragement means the world to us. Your support has helped us turn a dream into reality, and we couldn’t have done it without you.
