I'm 88 years old. And I've been sitting with something for a long time that I think I finally have the words for. My son David is 61. Quiet man. Keeps to himself. Manages everything on the inside and shows very little on the outside. People who meet him think he's calm, steady, thoughtful. He is all of those things. He is also, in ways I am only now able to see clearly, the man I made him into. Not on purpose. Not with any intention of harm. But intention doesn't change what gets passed down. His father Gerald was the same way. Quiet. Contained. A man who felt everything and said almost none of it. I loved Gerald for thirty-nine years and I spent most of those years not asking him to open up because, honestly, I didn't know how to receive it if he did. I was the same. Two people fluent in the same silence, raising a boy who learned that language before he learned to read. David never saw his father cry. He never saw me ask his father how he really felt. He never saw two people sit down with something difficult and talk it all the way through. for Full Story Visit please

My name is Gerald Whitmore. I'm 74 years old.
And I've been sitting in this chair trying to figure out how to say this for a long time.
This isn't a lesson. It isn't advice. It's just something I've been carrying around for four years now and it finally needed to come out.
Eleanor and I were married for thirty-one years. She was sharp, steady, and quietly the most present person in any room she walked into. And somewhere along the way β€” slowly, without any single moment I can point to β€” I watched her become someone I didn't fully know.
The worst part?
I called it normal. I called it comfort. I told myself that two people going quiet after thirty years was just what solid marriages looked like.
