The Main Club was the first gay bar in the Twin Ports area opened in 1983. Owner Bob Jansen founded the club after winning a suit against the College of Saint Scholastica for firing him for being gay. Only once in a Blue Moon would a Catholic institution fund a gay bar! Now, The Main Club has progressed into a landmark for the region's GLBT community! Come in and view the history of the Duluth/Superior Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex community throughout the club.

Thank You and Congratulations Bob Jansen

Congratulations to Bob Jansen, who received a letter of recognition from Governor Tony Evers for his historic contributions to the twin ports of Duluth-Superior.

In 1983, Bob founded The Main Club, which has been a safe and meaningful space for two generations. Bob was a founder of Duluth Superior Pride, where he will serve as Grand Marshall this year. These are just two of his countless lifetime achievements across Wisconsin LGBTQ history. There's a reason he's known as the "Harvey Milk of the Northland."

Bob is also one of our 2026 Be Seen Award honorees. His story was celebrated in the 2007 documentary, "The Main," and the 2026 book, "Remember the Main." We were SO honored to speak with Bob and share his story on our website: https://tinyurl.com/jansen26b
