Since the cat is out of the bag, we thought we'd address this. Since our move in February, the staff at Platypus have been nothing but welcoming and accommodating. We couldn't be happier with the space and how inclusive it is. Rest assured, we will continue to work with them as long as they will have us.
We believe that their current situation is no fault of anyone currently involved, and we encourage everyone to support them.
At their behest, there will be a $5 cover for future events to help cover the costs of talent and to take the pressure off the bar. We've gone without a cover charge for well over a decade, but times change and we want to be able to bring you the best we can deliver! Thank you to everyone who has been there for us.
A major shakeup at Platypus in The Grove: the acclaimed St. Louis cocktail bar is facing serious challenges after co-founder Tony Saputo was charged in federal court with identity theft and illegal credit card use.
According to prosecutors, the charges stem from alleged misuse of another person’s financial information. Saputo has since been removed from the business, and co-owner Meredith Barry says he no longer works at or handles funds for the bar.
At the same time, Platypus is dealing with financial strain, including a past-due rent lawsuit and additional debt claims. Despite the turmoil, the bar—recently named one of the best in the U.S.—is asking the community for support as it works through legal and financial challenges.
