Britpop in Seattle...
London Loves was started around 2000, after Seattle’s original Britpop night “Top of the Pops” at Baltic room folded. I give Ryan and Nadine full credit for inspiring me, and they were the first to have a night dedicated to bands like Blur, Charlatans, Pulp, Oasis, The LAs, Suede, Supergrass, Superfurry Animals, and more. Other Alternative nights would play a single occasionally, but having a Britpop night in Seattle was definitely a novelty.
I started London Loves at Kincora Pub on Seattle’s Capital hill, one or two Thursdays a month, and was lucky enough to be gifted Nadine’s contact at BMI which allowed me to do record releases for Kasabian, Oasis, The Coral, The Kills, White Stripes, and many more. After Kincora Pub closed, I moved London Loves to Capitol Club a block down in the same neighborhood for about a year, before Capitol Club closed. After a few months looking for another DJ spot, I was offered Wednesday nights at Buddha Belltown on 2nd ave downtown next to the famous Shorty’s. The night was struggling being on Wednesday nights, but I was happy enough getting guest DJ spots on the weekends. After a couple years DJing at Buddha, I had an opportunity to take over Thursday nights at LoFi in Seattles South Lake Union neighborhood. This started the best era for London Loves where we had a dancefloor, and we were able to build a small following. Nothing crazy, but I felt like we had a small community of 30-40 people that really loved the music, and were happy to have a home for their favorite music.
