It’s not every day that we have musicians who played with Benny Goodman. 🤩 😮

We’re honored to have Dan Barrett playing with Jessica King and the Sweetest Thing this weekend! (Online tickets for sale until noon on Saturday!!)

From Wikipedia:
The earliest mention of Dan Barrett was in the Melody Maker, 10 February 1973, which reported that he played “Ory’s Creole Trombone” at the end of Kid Ory’s Funeral on 28 January that year. He also played with Teddy Buckner, Andy Blakeney, and Alton Redd, all members of Ory’s band, during the funeral proceedings.

Barrett played valve trombone on the soundtrack to the film, The Cotton Club, in 1984.

In addition to leading a quintet with Howard Alden, Barrett has performed as a sideman with Benny Goodman and Buck Clayton. Barrett is the musical director for Arbors Records in Clearwater, Florida.

Rob Reich led his band at Bootleggers Ball at least 8 times over the years. October 19, 2024 was the last. After his sudden and unexpected death in May 2025, the local music and dance scene were “united in shock” as wrote in their piece honoring Rob.

We’re forever grateful for his contribution to Bootleggers and beyond. And we cherish videos like this that show him in his element - playing beautifully, communicating with vocalist Heidi Evelyn who was off camera, and then another queue to Daniel Fabricant on bass who you see make contact with Rob through a simple head nod and smile.

We’ll be celebrating Rob’s music through dance on Saturday, March 14th, with The Rod Reich Swings Left Legacy Band, led by his dear friend Daniel Fabricant.

It was nearly a year ago when we suddenly lost a member of our community who contributed immense joy, talent, and friendship to so many. Rob Reich was such an important part of the music & dance scene and we deeply miss his quirkiness and kindness on the Bootleggers Ball stage and beyond.

One of his close friends and fellow musician, Daniel Frabricant, has put together The Rob Reich Swings Left Legacy Band to share Rob’s music with us once again. And to bring us together in community to dance our hearts out in remembrance of this incredibly special person.

The Rob Reich Swings Left Legacy Band brings the music of our dear friend back to life the best way we know how — by playing it for dancers.

We celebrate Rob’s singular compositions the way they were meant to be heard: in motion, on a floor full of people. Come dance, remember, and keep the music swinging left.
