Today I Learned that the building was actually built in 1932, not 1940 as previously thought and that the actual name of the envelope factory was the "Field Ernst Envelope Co."

It also turns out that they hold the patent on "envelopes with see through windows."

Now you know.

New roof, who dis?

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted here but after years of waiting the bunker has a new roof on it.

Having to deal falling rocks, tar and sawdust from a number of people walking on the roof has been pretty awful, but one of the best parts about this is it might still be possible to get a roof deck after all the roof work is completed.

I'm concerned about the floors, the little rocks may have done some damage to them. It was a bit like a hailstorm in here for the last week.

That took most of the day but the acoustic treatment (ATS 4" microsuede panels) for the back wall of the studio is now up.

Sounds much different in here now. Low/mid more focused. Still have to install the ceiling clouds but the manufacturer didn't send me the right hardware.

Mad props to Jarred at Answer plumbing, who came in, kicked ass, and repaired the water heater. He also showed me where the previous plumber dropped the water heater during install, bending the bottom of the unit. I never expected to have someone working in here so quickly. From a phone call at 9:45 to a visit at 10:30am or so, that was amazing. Let's see if we have hot water in a couple of hours.

Today on this old bunker, the water heater and the dishwasher drain failed on the same day. Incredible. Fixing now.

It's 8am and there are roofers banging on the roof attempting to fix a water
Leak from the recent, severe rains. I may die. Too early.

Incredibly, I have fixed the hood fan issue in the kitchen.

I had a few quotes from people to fix it, ranging from $400 to $600. No one had any clue what was wrong.

I finally found the terribly designed, but very, very well informed http://ventahoodparts.weebly.com/ ventahood parts web site.

After a series of emails, with the kitchen hood wizard, Eric, he shipped a new motor and new "sensasource" switch. This, as it turns out, proved to be a massive waste of $90. After installing these parts, the problem persisted!

I figured it was the thermal switch, as it was the only piece of logic in the device. The way the switch works is to increase the speed of the high-speed blower when the surface near the hood is too hot. This switch is a DPST switch, trigged by very high temperature.

The real problem that was that the original switch was incorrectly wired at the factory. Someone had flipped the common and normally-closed pins.

High temperatures would cause the temperature switch to completely disconnect the motor from the circuit, shutting down the 600CFM fan and filling the house with smoke. This has been corrected, and now the hood is fully functional.

So, the next time I serve you steaks on the six-top grill, maybe, just maybe, we're not going to get any fire alarms.

A few nights ago we were watching a movie and Tesla the cat managed to get a toy wrapped around the big pole that we use to close the windows. The 8' pole came crashing down, taking out a piece of framed art with it.

Plate glass went everywhere, the conduit came off the wall, and a chunk of sheetrock was missing from where the conduit was once attached.

We replaced the frame (the art inside was intact!) last weekend and over the last couple days I've patched and repainted the wall.

Did I mention how much I hate working with Sheet Rock? It's pretty awful. Ah well. This has happened enough times that I now have a full wall repair kit, including all of our paint colors, at the ready.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a long tirade about how terrible the federally mandated governors inside of ceiling fans were. I had a fan fail back then, and I cut out the governor in that fan. Of course, we have two fans, and I guess it was only a matter of time in which the other cheap governor failed. It too has been removed.

I encourage you, when doing a new fan install, to find and destroy these pieces of s**t. It's obvious what happened here. When the bulb blew, the inrush current cooked the cheap diode on the back of the board.

The whole idea behind this garbage is that a device, inside of a device that you've bought and paid for, should limit your ability to do something. This is essentially hardware DRM and unacceptable.

Went to take the trash out and the can fell straight through the middle of the magic board with wheels, sending trash exploding in the hallway.

That will not happen again.

Meet my tools, fool.
