It started around 1am on Sunday. By nightfall, Turkish police had swept through gay bars and homes in cities across the country and detained at least 63 people in the largest crackdown on LGBTQ+ life Turkey has seen in years.

The raids hit Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Mersin, targeting gay bars, the offices of LGBTQ+ organisations, and the homes of activists. Among those swept up were current and former members of rights groups and HIV awareness organisations - people whose work is public health, now treated as a threat.

Prosecutors say they are investigating 162 suspects, nine associations and 13 businesses.

The government calls it the "My Family is Safe" operation. Justice Minister Akin Gürlek said it was meant to "protect children, the institution of the family, and public order."

Turkey's Human Rights Association was blunt about the branding: "The real name of this operation is not 'My Family is Safe'; it is state-led discrimination, politics of fear and the dismantling of civil society."

The European Parliament's rapporteur on Turkey, Nacho Sánchez Amor, called it "a shocking escalation in the repression" of LGBTQ+ people.

None of it comes out of nowhere. Istanbul Pride has been banned since 2015, and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has spent years describing LGBTQ+ people as a "deviant movement".

In a mission to promote self-expression and positivity, Armin van Buuren has made an appearance on Dutch TV show Make Up Your Mind in full drag.

The trance legend appeared on the show over the weekend, which pits drag queens against unknown celebrities dressed in drag and asks them to walk the runway in front of a judging panel.

Armin van Buuren appeared as ‘Mystery Queen’ Daisy Bell, dressed in a white and black dress with a large gold collar, dark brown wig, and a gold fascinator hat in the shape of a traditional Dutch house.

"Hey guys, it’s Armin, not in my usual outfit," he said in a video shared to his stories after the show. "But with this, I want to make a statement and invite everybody to party worldwide, but be who you want to be. Feel free, feel safe, and look after each other."

The A State Of Trance founder then went on to explain how music and dancing have "always been about freedom, expression and bringing people together".

"I want everyone to be themselves and feel safe on dancefloors worldwide," he said. "I'm proud to have taken part in this and hopefully remind you that it's okay to be exactly who you want to be."

George Takei spent years disliking Walter Koenig before the two men had ever met. Koenig joined Star Trek in its second season, and every line the new kid got was a line Sulu didn't. Decades later, when Takei finally got to marry the man he loved, Koenig was the one standing next to him as best man.

The wedding was September 14, 2008, in Los Angeles, which happened to be Koenig's own 72nd birthday. He spent it as best man while Takei and Brad Altman exchanged rings, and Nichelle Nichols stood up as "best lady" - a title she asked for herself after turning down matron of honor. Three of the original-series cast, in the narrow window when California was marrying same-sex couples.

Koenig turns 90 this week. The grudge came first, the friendship outlasted it, and when it finally mattered he was the man holding the ring box.

Fenton Bailey has made RuPaul's Drag Race since its first season in 2009. Days after the BBC dropped the British edition, he told BBC News that television is facing a "crisis of representation."

Bailey and Randy Barbato run World of Wonder, the production company behind every version of the show. The BBC confirmed last week that Drag Race UK will leave after eight series, part of a £500 million savings drive, and World of Wonder is taking future seasons to its own streaming service, WOW Presents Plus.

Plenty of fans expected another British channel to pick it up. Bailey is not sure he wants one. "Having the freedom to make the show the way we want may be preferable to getting into bed with another broadcaster and potentially be in the same situation a few more seasons down the road."

He does not think the BBC has a hidden agenda, and he said the people he dealt with there were passionate about the show. But he warned that "vulnerable communities are going to be even more vulnerable." The BBC also cut its gay dating show I Kissed a Boy this year, and a GLAAD report found more than 200 LGBTQ characters are set to disappear from TV screens in 2026.

"Even at the best of times, q***r culture is vulnerable and you can't take anything for granted," he said. "Just because a door opened yesterday doesn't mean it won't be slammed shut the next."
