Let’s try this again! One of our many amazing volunteers, Liz, is moving to Italy for 3 years! We’re giving her a proper send off this week (9/3) with a potluck party! Bring something to share (optional) and come dance with us!

Beginner friendly drop-in classes start at 7 & 8 pm! Social dancing to DJ music from 9-11 pm!

Our September schedule is up! New this month- Begintermediate Lindy Hop with Erin & Derrick- a great way to start bridging the gap between beginner and intermediate.

Don’t miss live music on 9/17 with Zzymzzy! And this month we have another Double Hop- come out for Zzymzzy on the 17th and you’ll get free admission to the DJ dance with DJ Derrick on the 24th! You’ll need to hold on to your wristband (does not need to still be worn). Note: Classes are not included with this deal.

Good news! The AC is up and running again!

7 pm Intro to Lindy Hop and 8 pm Beginner Lindy Hop are still happening tonight!

Additional classes, the social dance and potluck are still cancelled due to the short notice.

Unfortunately, the AC at Champion Ballroom is down, so we’re making some changes to tonight’s Firehouse.

No Dean Collins class, Intermediate class, dance, or potluck tonight.

Derrick & Erin will still be there at 7 & 8 pm for anyone who still wants to take a beginner class (just be warned — it’s HOT!)

Please help us spread the word to anyone who might be planning to come tonight!

Two Thursdays. One wristband!

Come dance to Sue Palmer & her Motel Swing Orchestra this Thursday, August 13th and we’ll give you a Firehouse Double Hop wristband.

Hang onto it and bring it back the following Thursday, August 20th and your dance admission is on us! 🎟️ Classes not included.

That’s two Thursdays of dancing for the price of one band night.

About:
Mary Lou Williams was a Pittsburgh-raised jazz pianist and composer who would go on to become one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time, writing music for Andy Kirk in Kansas City and later Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, as well as informally instructing jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. Williams’ harmonic and rhythmic ideas, while chronologically rooted deep in the swing era, were the foundation on which much of the bebop movement was built. Despite this, her own name and work is underrepresented in the Jazz Canon.

Adam Lee-Morgan is a Pittsburgh-Based Jazz Scholar, professor, and bandleader. This project: “Revitalizing the Big Band Works of Mary Lou Williams,” aims to ensure that Williams’ work is presented and passed along to new generations of jazz musicians and fans, furthering her legacy as a jazz icon. This Project Reconstructs her big band writings from her handwritten notes supplemented by transcription and musical analysis of her writing style.
