🕯 Today, we remember the 49 beautiful souls whose lives were tragically cut short at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando 10 years ago. It was a horrific act of hatred and gun violence that targeted our LGBTQ+ community. We also hold in our hearts the dozens injured and forever changed.

Pulse was more than a nightclub; it was a sanctuary of joy, love, and acceptance for everyone. The attack on Pulse was an attack on love and a stark reminder of the violence LGBTQ+ people still face.

Let’s honor the Pulse victims, and any victim of violence and discrimination, by fighting for a future where love conquers violence and q***r people are free to be themselves without fear.

Today marks 24 years since we lost our good friend Jeffery Owens. Jeffery and Michael Bussee were attacked and stabbed in a hate crime in the parking lot behind the Menagerie on the night of June 5, 2002.

It remains a haunting reminder of violence and its lasting impact. Owens was brutally beaten and stabbed outside the bar, leaving the community in shock. Bussee, who was also stabbed in the attack, survived his injuries. Owens tragically passed away in the early morning hours of June 6, 2002, due to an accidental overdose of a blood thinner adding another heartbreaking layer to the incident.

Following Owens’ death, the Riverside community rallied together in mourning, demanding justice and calling for greater protections against violence and discrimination. His passing sparked discussions about the vulnerability of LGBTQ+ community to violent crime, igniting renewed efforts toward advocacy.
Vigils, protests, and calls for action followed, ensuring that his legacy would not be forgotten.

The police worked diligently to track down the attackers. After an extensive investigation, authorities identified and arrested the suspects.
In honor of Owens, a small memorial was placed at the entrance of the parking lot where he was attacked. This site serves as a solemn reminder of the tragedy that unfolded there. It stands not only as a tribute to his life but as a symbol of resilience and the ongoing fight against hate.
Over the years, Owens has been remembered through various tributes. One significant tribute was part of the INvisible/UNheard history series, which highlights overlooked stories and histories, ensuring that Owens’ legacy remains visible and that his tragic death continues to inspire conversations about justice and equality. The creators of this series have worked to shed light on marginalized histories, ensuring that individuals like Owens are never forgotten.

While time has passed, Owens’ legacy continues to be felt. His story remains a call to action for justice, equality, and the protection of vulnerable communities. The discussions sparked by his death serve as a reminder that every individual deserves safety, respect, and dignity.
