Bomberger’s Declaration 2022 🎆 🥃

Most folks are no stranger to Michter’s line of fantastic whiskeys, of which Bomberger’s Declaration is a part. But how many know the storied history behind the brand? While it’s quite a bit longer than we have space for here, we can quickly brush up on the basic facts.

In 1753, Shenks distillery was founded in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania by a Swiss Mennonite. In the mid 1800’s it changed hands and names and operated as the Bomberger distillery until prohibition. Two more sales of the distillery in the following decades and Michter’s was established in 1951, making whiskey until 1989 when the facility closed due to bankruptcy. A special batch of 1974 whiskey distilled here was sold under the name A.H. Hirsch Reserve becoming one of the most sought after and revered whiskeys of all time.

In 2004, the Michter’s brand was revived, and a distillery was built in Louisville, Kentucky expanding the line up of products exponentially. This release honors the brand’s original home base and contains a bourbon of an unknown mashbill (they keep that stuff a secret), with no age statement, though some believe the age to be in the 5 to 10 year range. Bottled at 108 proof, one benchmark of this bourbon is that some of it sees its time in barrel inside a chinquapin oak barrel whose wood has been seasoned for 3 years before holding any liquid. Chinquapin is a hardwood similar to chestnut that imparts its own special flavor profile on this already dynamic bourbon. This bottle retails for $120 through abc (if you can even find it) and this vintage is long gone. Come see what all the hubbub is about tonight at the low price of $5 per ounce!

MALT MONDAY 🥃
Smooth Ambler Contradiction Bourbon 🐘

Smooth Ambler is a somewhat younger distillery from Greenbrier county, West Virginia that was established in 2009. Like a lot of distilleries that popped up during the whiskey boom, they started things off by sourcing their whiskey while production and aging of their own products were in their infancy, and they did so by creating their Old Scout brand, a high rye bourbon they got from MGP in Indiana. In 2017 the distillery was purchased by Pernod Ricard, only two years after this brand, Contradiction, was released. Originally a blend of a younger distillate from Smooth Ambler themselves along with a much older bourbon from MGP and bottled at a higher proof, the brand eventually settled down to 92 proof and is now a blend of three straight whiskeys, presently including a Tennessee bourbon widely believed (but not confirmed) to come from George Dickel. The three mashbills in this blend are 71% corn, 21% wheat, 8% malted barley (West Virginia) - 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley (Indiana) - 84% corn, 8% rye, 8% malted barley. What an interesting blend it is with a wheated bourbon, a high rye bourbon and super corn forward Tennessee whiskey. The result is something better than the sum of its part, a robust and layered, yet uncomplicated whiskey. On this dreary, rainy day, treat yourself to $5 one ounce pours of this deliciousness.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye 🦃 🥃

We had the pleasure of having an awesome staff training with our friend JoAnn Street from Campari / Wild Turkey this afternoon so we figured, why not keep the Wild Turkey train going?!

A few weeks back we featured the 8 year 101 Bourbon and talked a lot about the history of the brand, so let’s talk about this whiskey instead! As we know, Wild Turkey makes two whiskeys, a bourbon and a rye. They bottle them with different ages, proofs and names, but they all come from the same two recipes. Jimmy Russell is a bourbon man who likes his whiskey strong, and his son Eddie Russell is a rye lover who likes his whiskey with some extra age. Rare Breed Rye is a combination of these two industry veterans’ love of whiskey, a barrel strength rye whiskey that blends 4-8 year old barrels to deliver a spicy and incredible flavor profile that keeps you coming back. And what a treat it is at $5 per ounce, tonight only!
