Expatriate

Expatriate Expatriate is a cocktail lounge in Portland, Oregon, opened in July 2013 by Kyle Linden Webster and Naomi Pomeroy.

Expatriate is an engaging, atmospheric, and freewheeling place for drinking and eating just across the street from Naomi Pomeroy’s Beast. Conventional wisdom considers it a cocktail lounge, and while Expatriate is run by noted bartender Kyle Linden Webster, it is careful attention to the rituals of hospitality that makes this room hum. The offerings from the bar, and from Pomeroy’s menu of drinkin

g snacks—far-flung in origin and adhering to tradition only if it yields delectable results—makes finding a sense of place both easy and impossible, depending on your point of view. Expatriate drinks are timely, without neglecting what makes a cocktail a classic. Similarly playful, unafraid of pleasure, enlivening the senses as peak flavors resonate on the palate and in the mind, Expatriate food encourages a certain tolerance of ambiguity, and of course, sharing. It’s in that spirit, in the balance between the implicit and explicit, that Expatriate works as a whole, as a place for drinking and eating other than the sum of its parts.

In love, for love, and with love, through this swiftly tilting shared experience, Expatriate will be open tonight from 5pm until midnight, in solidarity with all who are working towards a more perfect union, however that collective will may manifest itself.

What we have as individuals in the practice of our vocation, within the confines of this small bar is a rare, continuous and humble belief that the world outside of our walls can become more kind, beautiful, and just. In the face of a much different reality, our staff has chosen to keep on moving. We remain a stubbornly optimistic place focused in comfort, care and cooperation, albeit an occasionally pragmatic one. Wherever on the map your pin might land on the 30th of January, two thousand and twenty six years into the common era, we’d be grateful if you joined us, even if you won’t be coming into the room.

At the risk of being impolite, a brief acknowledgement of our incredibly generous staff: By unanimous decision, every single human who works at Expatriate will share 10% of their tips with the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition for the next week, alongside 10% of our gross sales as a business. What we have is in common. Our staff, our city, our faith in something greater than ourselves. We’d be grateful to offer our best contribution to that end, if you’re so inclined.
