Today we lost Cheeto 💔💔💔💔💔💔

Cheeto was known as one of the "cupboard kitties". He was initially trapped for TNR, but it was clear he had the potential to possibly come around, so I took him into my rescue. Cheeto had corneal scarring that left him visibly impaired. He also had a horrendous mouth that required a pretty extensive dental. He lived at my house for the first few months, as I worked with him. Slowly he began to trust me, and started to love being pet and brushed. Due to his vision impairment, I was hesitant to bring him to the lounge. But I took a chance and what happened was magical: this once super scared boy started venturing around the lounge! He would resort to going back into the cupboard when it got busy, but would often be out and about when it was quiet. Cheeto LOVED other cats, and would protect them if he thought they were in danger. Just an all around sweet old man with the most gentle soul.

Yesterday he seemed a bit off: just not as active and breathing a little heavier than normal. When I got to the lounge this morning, he was laying by the door, like he was waiting for me 😭 He was lethargic, cold, and was struggling to breathe 💔💔💔

I rushed him to North Boros, but the vet recognized that he was in critical condition and was most likely suffering. I had to make the incredibly difficult decision to let him go peacefully.

These are the moments in rescue that break us down. We try as hard as we can to do right by these animals that have known nothing but devastation. We give them as much love and compassion as we can, but sometimes it's just not enough.

Please do something kind for someone else today, in honor of our sweet Cheeto. My Cheetle Beetle as I called him 🧡 My big-headed orange boy. I'm gonna miss you sweet angel, I just hope you can see all the colors now

I say this with love, compassion, and honesty: I am CLOSED for intakes. If you are on my wait list, I have made a commitment to you and the animals, so I will 100% honor that. But the reality is that I am only one person, I have extremely limited resources, I have many cats relying on me, I need to reserve some of my strength to continue to care for my current rescues, and I am struggling. I looked around the lounge today at all of my amazing, perfectly adoptable cats, and faced the reality that there just aren't enough good adopters to maintain my current intake. I have taken in over 100 cats this year so far, and I do this by myself. I have to make sure I am doing everything I can to give them the love and care they deserve, so I cannot take on any more kitties. Adoptions have been slower, donations have been down, lounge visits are waayyyy down. I just don't have the financial means, the time, or the space to take any more cats in. I will continue to offer guidance and support to those that call me asking for help. But others need to step up. If you are able to donate food, litter, or money, that is wonderful. If you can foster or hold a cat for a week or more, that is also incredibly helpful. If you are willing to learn how to use a trap, I will gladly teach you and guide you. I'm always here for support, to answer questions, to give guidance, ALWAYS. But I am getting calls every day from people who find cats and are not willing to do anything, they simply want me to come "rescue". I have no magical powers, I do not have endless amounts of money, space, or time. I knew NOTHING about rescue when I started on this journey: if I can learn, then anyone can. You don't have to do what I do, but you can do something. If you don't have the financial means (most of us don't these days), call your local government officials, tell them about what you are seeing. Complain that your city shelter (HARP) offers zero support, and that is what your tax dollars are paying for. That costs you nothing. But it HELPS. We all need to do our part. There is no city funding for small rescues 🫤
Thank you for your support and love 🫶

Adoptions #157 & #158: Ghostface Kittah and Purr-Rza from the Wutang Kitty Clan!! This sweet family had recently lost their senior kitty, and finally felt ready to adopt some new fur babies. When they met this brother-sister duo, they knew they would be a perfect fit for their family. Ghostface and Purr-Rza were rescued from a trailer park with their siblings. They were very scared and unsure of people at first, but slowly learned to trust. Now they are just the sweetest!! Happy life, babies!

Adoption #155: Portland! This dude was rescued after he was seen running across the highway like a maniac. He was only 5 weeks old and needed a lot of nurturing, as he was without his mama. But he blossomed into the sweetest, most playful little guy. His new parents met him and instantly knew he was the one. Portland will be going home to a big kitten brother! He's gonna be soooo happy 🥰

Adoption #154: Stuart Little!! This dude was rescued after climbing up into a car engine for 3 days. He came out covered in soot. Many of you swooned over this tiny petite man at the lounge because he is sooooo sweet and cuddly!! His new mama adopted a cat from me last year, and he needed a buddy. So Stuart will be going home to a new big brother! Happy life, baby boy!!

Adoption #153: Cheerio!!!!!! This sweet boy was trapped by Regina Deloria 🖤 At the time we weren't sure if he would be friendly, so I agreed to take him in and assess him. It was clear that this boy was totally workable and not feral: he was just scared. He has learned to LOVE pets and loves being brushed. He also loves other kitties!!! Many of you know him as one of the "cupboard cats" here at Whisker Wonderland. Now he is going to his forever home where he will be a big brother to another kitty 🧡🧡🧡🧡Happy life, Cheerio!!

Adoptions #151 & #152: Buddy and Scruffy!!! Ok, this is gonna be a long one 😅 I was contacted back in January by this lovely couple who were desperate for help. Buddy, a cat that they had been feeding for 15 years, and Scruffy, a cat they'd been feeding for a year, needed a place to stay. Terry & Marilyn had been feeding and taking care of Buddy & Scruffy: they had heated houses for them on their porch, and fed them every day. Their landlord would not allow them to bring the cats inside, so they tried to make them as comfortable as they could outside. But their landlord starting making threats towards the cats, saying he was going to "get rid of them" 🤬 They called me in tears, begging me to take them in. So of course I said yes! Both cats needed neutered and both needed dentals. Buddy (who you've met at the lounge) was much more comfortable with people, while Scruffy (who you've never met) had to stay at my house because he is not as friendly. Terry and Marilyn came to visit Buddy at the lounge every weekend, and they found a new place to live that allows cats! So now both boys will be home with them forever 🫶🫶🫶
