Hosting Swing Dances & Dance Events in the Tampa Bay (FL) area since January 1999. Learn to dance in a social setting. Classes are easy to understand and stress-free. SAVOY SOUTH was named in honor of the Savoy Ballroom, Harlem, New York. The building was a city block long. Two bands, one at each end played all night long but not at the same time. When one band took a break, the other band played.
Music was heard and danced to until it was time to go home. In the height of the Harlem Renaissance, the Savoy Ballroom was one of the only dance clubs (during segregation) that was open to all. A club that allowed "colored" folk and whites to share the same dance floor was commonly known as a "Black & Tan" club. Lindy Hop was honed and crafted in Cats Corner at the Savoy Ballroom. Legends Frankie Manning and Whitey's Lindy Hoppers practiced daily and danced at night in the Savoy Ballroom. Sadly, dance clubs declined after WWII and 60's Bebop. The Savoy Ballroom was demolished to build a housing project. Only a plaque commemorates what was once the "Home of Happy Feet". SAVOY SOUTH DANCE HALL (Florida) is now the place where all can come to dance. Novice to seasoned dancers all dance with the young and young at heart. Differences in race; color; creed; or gender are left at the door when attending a dance. We strive to make each dance; workshop; cruise (Savoy at Sea) or community event a place where All Are Welcome and music that makes you "Get Up & Dance". Welcome to the "Home of Happy Feet".
