Five years ago, at 5:36 p.m. in Kabul — which was 8:06 a.m. Central Time here at home — a su***de bomber attacked Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. This tragic attack took the lives of 13 U.S. service members, wounded 18 others, and killed over 170 Afghan civilians. CPL Daegan Page of Omaha was one of those 13 service members that paid the ultimate price for the possibility of freedom for so many people. Over 120,000 people were evacuated and started their journey to freedom thanks to the sacrifice and dedication of all service members involved in Operation Allies Refuge.
Today Daegan's family celebrates his life and carries forward his legacy through the work of the CPL Daegan Page Foundation. They work with families, veterans, and active-duty members to meet real needs. They share stories and provide resources and host events that bring people together. They give scholarships and partner with others who share their goals, such as the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation.
Today we ask that you remember those 13 service members killed, most specifically our local hero, CPL Daegan Page. The Corporal Daegan Page Foundation is about more than remembering one Marine. It’s about continuing what he started. Service. Strength. Love that never ends.
