(pronounced poh-kay) is a traditional Hawaiian dish that dates back centuries, originally made by Native Hawaiians using freshly caught fish seasoned with sea salt, seaweed, and kukui nuts. The word means “to slice,” reflecting its simple preparation. In the late 1800s, Asian influences—especially from Japanese immigrants—introduced ingredients like soy sauce and sesame oil, shaping modern poke. The poke bowl as we know it today, served over rice with toppings like avocado and spicy sauces, emerged in the 2000s as a fresh, customizable, and health-focused evolution of the original dish.

is a Japanese cooking technique dating back to the 1600s, combining “teri” (shine) and “yaki” (grill), referring to the glossy glaze created from soy sauce, sugar, and mirin. Traditionally used for fish in Japan, it was a lighter preparation than what many know today. In the 20th century—especially in Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast—Japanese immigrants adapted teriyaki into a sweeter, richer sauce with garlic and ginger, applying it to chicken, beef, and more. Today, it’s a widely loved flavor known for its savory-sweet balance and signature glaze.

An old fashioned donut is a classic cake donut with a crisp, cracked exterior and a soft, tender inside. Made with baking powder instead of yeast, it has a denser, slightly crumbly texture and is often flavored with vanilla or nutmeg. Its signature ridges form while frying, creating crispy edges that hold glaze perfectly.

It dates back to the late 1800s–early 1900s, when baking powder made cake-style donuts faster and easier to produce. By the early 20th century, they became a staple in American bakeries and diners. The familiar ring shape itself is often credited to a ship’s captain, Hanson Gregory, in 1847—he punched a hole in the center so the dough would cook more evenly.

Unlike lighter yeast-raised donuts, the old fashioned is all about texture and balance—slightly crisp, subtly sweet, and satisfying without being over-the-top. It’s a timeless, no-frills donut that’s just as good today as it was a century ago.

Two little treats with very different histories: macarons and cake pops.

Macarons go way back. They trace their roots to Italy in the 1500s and made their way to France, where pastry chefs eventually turned them into the delicate almond meringue sandwich cookies we know today. The colorful filled version became famous in Paris and is now one of the most iconic pastries in the world.

Cake pops, on the other hand, are a much more modern dessert. They really took off in the late 2000s when a baker named Bakerella started sharing them online. The idea is simple—cake mixed with frosting, rolled into a ball, dipped in chocolate, and served on a stick.

Two totally different eras of desserts… but both are the perfect little sweet treat with coffee.

Ever wonder where the black & white cookie came from? 🖤🤍

Born in New York City Jewish bakeries in the early 1900s, the black & white cookie became a staple of classic New York delis.

Created by Jewish immigrant bakers, the cookie is soft and cake-like with a domed top and flat bottom, iced with half dark chocolate fondant and half vanilla fondant.

The cookie itself has notes of vanilla with just a hint of lemon, which balances the sweetness of the icing.

Despite the name, it’s actually closer to a small cake than a cookie — and it was traditionally served in delis alongside a cup of coffee.

Over a century later, it remains one of the most iconic treats in New York deli culture. 🖤🤍
