Oliva built its name the slow way — family-run, Nicaraguan leaf, and a reputation among people who smoke a lot of ci**rs rather than people who talk about them. This is the night to try something you've been curious about without committing to a box first.

Bourbon says caramel and oak, and it rarely fights anything.

Scotch says smoke meeting smoke, which is either the best idea of your night or a complete mistake depending on the cigar.

Rye says spice against spice, and it wakes up a cigar that was starting to go quiet.

There isn't a correct answer, which is exactly why everyone at the table has one.

It's a small decision and it changes the whole evening. Forty minutes that belong to you, a cigar chosen without overthinking it, a drink someone actually built, and a chair that doesn't want anything from you.

How to taste three whiskeys without pretending you know what you're doing.

Nose first, and don't bury your face in the glass — hold it a few inches away and breathe normally.

Small sip. Let it sit. The first one wakes your palate up; it doesn't count.

Now compare. Which is sweeter? Which finishes longer? Which one do you want again in ten minutes? That last question is the only one that matters.

Water between pours. It resets your palate better than anything else on the bar.

That's the whole method. Everything else is vocabulary.

Steak Night returns Thursday, October 22 at 6:00 PM. $50 per person.

There's a version of dinner that's refueling and a version that's the whole evening. This is the second one — a proper steak, a table nobody rushes you from, and a cigar afterward while the conversation keeps going long past the plates being cleared.

Five steps, about two minutes, and a result most bars can't reproduce. The difference is never the recipe — everyone has the recipe. It's the large cube that melts slowly instead of drowning the drink, the stirring that chills without diluting, and the orange peel expressed over the surface so you smell it before you taste anything.

This is the two-week window everyone waits for — cool enough that a heavier cigar makes sense, warm enough that sitting outside is a pleasure instead of an endurance test. It doesn't last. It never does.

The patio is open. Bring a jacket you'll end up not needing until the second half of the cigar.

Would you rather: one $50 cigar, or five $10 ci**rs?

One argument says the $50 is an experience — a night you'll remember, a cigar you'll talk about, something worth the occasion.

The other says five nights beat one night, that variety teaches you more than prestige does, and that plenty of $10 ci**rs have outperformed their price tag in this very room.

There's no house position on this. There is, however, a very strong opinion at most of our tables.

SINGLES: you try more, you learn faster, and you never get stuck with twenty-four of something you liked once. This is how most people should buy for the first year.

BOX: the price per stick improves, the ci**rs age together, and having one you genuinely love sitting at home changes how often you reach for it. Also — and nobody admits this — there's satisfaction in the box itself.

The honest advice: smoke three singles before you commit to twenty-four. Then commit with confidence.
