For the last couple years, every time you buy a Paloma at Pretty Decent, $1 goes to Isla Urbana to send to the village of Logoche, Miahuatlán to build rainwater capture tanks. This is important work, as the aquifers and wells in Logoche are drying up. This village is the home of the producers for one of our favorite mezcal brands, NETA. Each year on our group trip to Oaxaca our guests go visit Logoche and 9-10 producers in the village. They taste a lot of delicious things, we have a big lunch (the tlayudas from 2024 are legendary) and they see those water tanks and learn about battling water insecurity.
In January of this year we tasted some of the first batches of NETA that were fermented with captured rainwater. They’re….different. The classic heavy minerality in mezcales from this region is toned down and the flavor of the plant comes forward more.
We are very proud to release an incredibly rare batch from Don Tomás García Cruz. It is a blend of tepextate and pulquero, fermented with rainwater from his tank and distilled in refrescadera. Tomás has long had a refrescadera sautéed to one of his stills, but did not use it until recently when he tasted the mezcales of his neighbor Ranulfo and decided to work with it a bit himself. Far as I know: first and only rainwater private batch of NETA in the US, and the only refrescadera-distilled batch by Tomás in the States. Pretty rare, and pretty decent.
Pre-sales are available on our website now. Limit 2/customer. This batch is scheduled to arrive the week of May 18 and will likely be ready for pick-up on May 22. If there is a hiccup it will be one week later.
