This Memorial Day weekend we’re pausing to remember those who sacrificed their lives in the fight for our rights & freedom. A reminder that freedom is never free— and that each generation must learn for itself the true costs of our ongoing experiment in Democracy. Don’t let their sacrifices go to waste…many have died to protect our way of life— these days we must choose to live to protect it— with compassion, respect, integrity, and above all, thoughtful participation.

When the Higgins Building— which houses The Edison—was built in 1910, this is what nearby Spring Street looked like. LA was just emerging from the Victorian era and beginning to fully embrace the innovation and imagination of the Industrial Age. The private power plant Thomas Higgins built in the sub-basement of his revolutionary structure would power such modern innovations as electric elevators, fans, lighting, and even new fangled machines called vacuum cleaners!
