Clowns have always been political in some sense. Clowns throuout history have represented the common man, the underdog. Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and a multitiude of other clowns, whether classically painted or not, have built their careers on comedically sticking it to the man. Not one loveable scamp has represented the ruling class or those in charge, unless it was mockery. As a clown it is my duty to put a spotlight on injustices and shortcomings of those in charge with humor, showmanship and finesse (or sometimes blatant lack thereof). I refuse to wear the paint but not commit to the tradition that goes with it. It may be seen as controversial or it may very well become dangerous for me, but honestly those stakes make the stage that much more appealing, and the curtain call that much more meaningful.
