What is the Velveteen?

From The Hub to The Velveteen: Our Story
If you’ve been with us for a while, you know The Velveteen hasn’t always been The Velveteen. In fact, our story in Lake Mills began back in 2018 as The Hub.

We brought with us the concept behind our Cambridge business, CamRock Cafe & Sport, a little bit of everything under one roof. The Hub combined a coffee shop, w**e bar, bike shop, food, and a place for the community to gather. While that concept had worked well in Cambridge, we quickly learned that Lake Mills was going to write its own story.

And then, of course, came 2020.
Like so many small businesses, we learned how to pivot—quickly. We expanded our food menu and began offering tasty dinners to-go. As life slowly returned to normal, our business continued to evolve. We said goodbye to the coffee shop, focused more on dinner, made the most of our beautiful back patio, and expanded the bar into a full cocktail experience with an emphasis on handcrafted drinks.

Change is good, right?
In 2024, another big change came our way when Derek had the opportunity to return to his corporate career at JHTNA. It made sense for our family, but it also meant reimagining the business once again. Full dinner service no longer fit where we were headed—and we realized this was the perfect opportunity to create something new.

The Velveteen Cocktail Lounge was born.
New name. New vibe. Elevated cocktails. Comfy chairs. A little speakeasy inspiration. A cozy basement lounge with games and tucked-away spaces. A private back patio. And, because we come from a family filled with creative talents, workshops, themed events, Bingo nights, candle pouring, painting, chunky blankets, and all sorts of creative experiences naturally found their way into the mix.

Today, The Velveteen is tucked inside a beautiful early-1900s Victorian home in downtown Lake Mills, where history lingers, cocktails flow, and some say a few former residents never quite left.

We’ve changed a lot since 2018, but one thing hasn’t: we want this to be a place where people gather.

Come for a handcrafted cocktail. Get creative. Play a game. Celebrate something special. Find a cozy chair and catch up with a friend. Explore the house and stay awhile.

The Velveteen Cocktail Lounge
Cocktails. Creativity. Community.
