Accordion ‘Diatonic’ DeChaunac Hudson Valley, NY

It’s New York wine month here at Eliza and this Wednesday we’re pouring a sparkling red wine made just 20 minutes from us in Accord. Accordion is a winery project founded by French-born Malou, who started sourcing grapes from the Hudson Valley in 2021 and making wine in her tiny garage. Despite growing up in Perpignan surrounded by vineyards, she didn’t truly catch the wine bug until she landed in Westchester and began working at a small wine shop and bar.

In the last year, exciting things have been happening at the winery; she was able to move her project to a larger space, a barn with a bit of land where she hopes to one day plant her very own vineyard. In recent years they have grown their small team, and she’s hoping to expand their operation into a running farm, winery and tasting room where one can leave with a bottle of wine, a jar of jam or a dozen eggs that all come from the very same place.

With her boundless curiosity and passion for working in the Hudson Valley, it’s people like Malou that make us think about the future of winemaking in New York, and specifically in our own backyard. From our perspective, things are looking very bright!

This wine, ‘Diatonic’ is a refreshing, juicy and dry sparkling red wine with notes of plum, blackberry and raspberry with woodsy, earthy notes of spice and forest floor. I’d say that one might need to try this wine with a bit of fish sauce and steak. $12/glass tonight…until it’s gone.

Maybe it was the long, hard winter or maybe it’s just that the universe knows we needed this, but this year’s asparagus from is the best we’ve ever had. It doesn’t need much…just a little char from the grill, some black garlic aioli and crispy shallots. 🤌🏼

Usonia ‘New Suns’ Cabernet Franc Finger Lakes 2023

We’re kicking off NY wine month here at Eliza and our first SWP comes from Julia and Alex of Usonia winery located on Cayuga Lake. They named their project after architect Frank Llyod Wright’s use of the word, “to refer to his vision of a fully democratic American landscape, unbound by Old World conventions.” They work with old European varieties and new American ones, from which they craft thoughtful and approachable wines that taste like where they’re from.

The work is not easy and the Finger Lakes provide an unforgiving climate, a place cold enough in the winter that one can have a whole vineyard die in sub zero temperatures. Despite the difficulty of their work, it is important to them to explore not only what has grown well there in the past but also to look towards the future and explore if there might be other grapes that can thrive in this difficult climate. As vines die in the ‘New Suns’ vineyard, they are replaced by heartier hybrids suited for the region.

‘New Suns’ is made with 100% Cabernet Franc. It’s a bright and balanced expression of the grape, with notes of fresh red berries, to***co and mossy earth. This is great wine to drink on a cozy spring day, $13/glass tonight...until it’s gone.

Schirru ‘Arkimia’ Vino Bianco Sardegna, IT 2024

Today’s pour is a grape called Nuragus that was brought to Sardinia by the Phoenicians in the 12 Century BC. Over time the grape has adapted to the island climate and is now considered to be distinctive from other white Italian grapes. The families on the inland of Sardinia have a long history of cultivating vines and making wine solely for their friends and neighbors. Through the years this ritual has helped them preserve and maintain their very special and singular grape varieties found there. As such, the Nuragus variety is synonymous with Sardinian identity and was at one point the most widely planted grape vines on the island.

In the small town of Orroli, home to the abandoned and profound towers of the ancient Nuragic civilization sits the Schirru winery. Here is where brothers Marco and Michele make wine from their families’ vineyards, some of which are over a 100 years old. This specific bottling is named ‘Arkimia’ after an alchemic term of Latin origin that describes the process of changing ‘vile metals into gold’ a nod to the many years Nuragus was thought of as a substandard grape. Despite this preconceived notion of the grape, the brothers have dedicated time and effort into discovering how to grow and vinify Nuragus in a way that brings interest and complexity to the final wines.

This Sardinian white smells like yellow plums, sea breeze and dried herbs. It’s a sunny, textured white wine that tastes like smoked sea salt, apple peel and toasted pine nuts. $14/glass tonight…until it’s gone !
