Jonas Dostert Pinot Noir Mosel Germany 2024

Tonight we’re sharing a pinot noir that comes from the Mosel, a region better known for making riesling than pinot. There are in fact a small, very talented handful of producers that are doing great work with this grape in the land of riesling. Producers that are using their knowledge gained from working abroad and applying this experience to their vineyards and to their w**es; it is definitely one of the most exciting times to drink pinot noir from this region.

Jonas grew up in an area of the Mosel that’s on the border of Luxembourg referred as the Obermosel, it’s where the soils are not slate but limestone. He spent a couple years learning and working in Burgundy and gaining experience there before moving back to his home region. His pinot noir is traditionally semi-carbonically fermented, pressed and then aged in barrels until he deems them ready to bottle. This w**e is the perfect red to drink on a sunny, crisp autumn day. It smells of sage and pepper and tastes of florals, red forest berries and salt. $18/glass until it’s gone!

Matassa ‘Olla Rouge’ Rousillion, FR
By now, you might have heard of Matassa, a legendary vigneron in the Roussillon. The w**ery and vineyards sit closer to Barcelona than to Paris and the landscape is rugged, dusty and mediterranean.
Tonight we’re pouring his red w**e called “Olla Rouge.” It’s a blend of grenache, grenache gris and macabeo and pours translucent, ruby red in the glass. It smells like summer berries, wild sage and violets. Matassa’s Tom Lubbe, originally from South Africa but grew up in New Zealand, has been making w**e here since 2003 and by now feels right at home. He’s been a great resource for younger vignerons in the area and a revelation in a glass for many natural w**e drinkers over the years.

Didier Grappe Traminer Jura FR 2023

The w**e we’re pouring tonight is made by the curious and thoughtful w**emaker Didier Grappe. He is a Jurassic native who wasn’t born to a family of vignerons but came into w**emaking as a hobby on weekends from his industrial mechanic job by tending to a small plot of vines for his neighbor. Inspired by his time in the vineyards, Didier attended enology school in Beaune, where he was in a graduating class with fellow future naturalists like Bruno Duchene and Jean-Louis Tribouley.

Didier, along with a handful of other naturalists, forged their own w**emaking path in the Jura. He prefers not to filter his w**es and this style is rarely approved by the governing body of French w**e law (known as the ‘AOC’ for short). Didier does not submit his w**es to be approved by the AOC and therefore is not allowed to put the grape name or the region’s name on the label. Because of this he chooses to label it under Savagnin’s lesser known name, Traminer. He believes that AOC w**es are “technically polished but lacking soul.”

This w**e has notes of fresh lemon zest, green apple and chalky minerality. It’s a textured delight with an earthiness that smells of dried hay and chamomile tea. Come try this unconventional style of Jura w**e tonight for $16/glass…until it’s gone!

Jonas Dostert ‘Pure Dolomite’ Mosel Germany 2024

During Medieval times Elbling was the most widely cultivated grape in Germany. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a decline in planting Elbling and Riesling became favored. There still are some producers, like the young Jonas Dostert who is very close to Luxembourg, who still works with this Mosel gem. His thoughtful and inquisitive approach to working with this grape shows us its potential for making dynamic and memorable w**es.

Jonas grew up in Germany and spent a couple years learning and working in Burgundy with a famous (maybe one of the most famous!) white w**emaker, Leflaive. The soils in the Obermosel are limestone dominant, just like they are in Burgundy, which made it a great place for Jonas to study. This w**e is fermented and aged in barrels until Jonas deems it ready. This bottling is called ‘Pure Dolomite’ to denote that it comes from limestone soils. This blend of Chardonnay and Elbling has bright, crisp notes of preserved lemon followed by a cooling and mouth watering minerality. It’s a perfect glass to wash down an oyster or two, $15/glass until it’s gone!

Grange Tiphaine ‘Clef de Sol’ Chenin Blanc 2024, Loire Valley 2024
This 100% Chenin Blanc is made by the talented husband and wife team, Coralie and Damien at their estate, La Grange Tiphaine. Tonight, we’re pouring their ‘Clef de Sol’ Chenin Blanc out of magnum!
La Grange Tiphaine is a family owned estate located in the small Loire Valley town of Ambroise, how Damien came to take over the estate is a bit of a harrowing tale. Damien’s father Jackie fell ill in 2009, causing Damien to take over at just 22 years of age. Damien’s vision helped transition the estate to organic viticulture and the family supported his new direction. Their previous farming approach used vineyard sprays, that were in fashion at the time and state of the art because they allowed those who worked the vineyards to spend less time there. However, the family believes that these types of sprays and chemicals used for the vines were potentially the cause of Jackie’s eventual illness and passing.
Damien is now the director and head of the region where he makes w**e, Montlouis. Over the years, he has become a resource to others about farming techniques and lower intervention w**emaking. He seems to always find the time to answer any question with thoughtful and careful consideration. This sublime and cozy chenin is just $14/glass tonight…until it’s gone.

Clos Bateau ‘Croix Pennet’ Lantignié Beaujolais 2024

Vignerons Sylvie and Thierry left Amsterdam in 2019 to take over a small w**ery with 5.5ha of vineyards in Latignié. The pair arrived inspired to try and work in accordance with nature as much as possible; they are self-described as a nature-friendly domain. Each year they plant more trees to increase biodiversity in the vineyards. They also gather herbs from their garden and use them to make preparations for spraying on the vines to help prevent vine disease and deter pests. This holistic approach is rare in Beaujolais but they listen to their hearts and make w**e in a way that they feel brings them closer to nature and they believe will help to preserve it for generations to come.

Their ‘Croix Pennet’ cuvée comes from vines perched on a sunny hill behind their w**ery that’s 350m in altitude. The soils there are an interesting mix of pink granite, clay and quartz. This gamay tastes of dried herbs, raspberries and damp soil. $16/glass tonight…until it’s gone.
