A letter to Club Impulse from DJ Greg Mack:
21 years ago I had a rare night off from djing in the flats and the warehouse district. I was single and there was this beautiful woman that my friend wanted to introduce me to, so we went to this club that I hadn’t heard of - Impulse lounge inside the Holiday Inn.
It was Friday night and the place was already packed by the time we got there. Dj Don was playing music for a swing dance crowd during happy hour and DJ Sonny took over at 9. The band was Rumplestiltskin - they played all the best disco, Motown and party hits while Sonny spun dance music in between.
The place was full of energy and the people didn’t care how old you were, how much money you made or what you looked like. They all just wanted to have a good time. It was that night I was sure of two things- I knew that woman I just met was going to be an important part of my life and that I wanted to DJ at Impulse.
After going to Impulse every chance I got (which wasn’t often for a DJ - I worked most Friday and Saturday nights), I got my wish on New Years Eve 2015. DJ Don got to know me well from pestering him for years to add me to the roster and when he didn’t have a DJ for the biggest night of the year, he called me.
I loved djing for the Impulse crowd. They loved a lot of the same music that I loved! It was a good ride until COVID hit. We were closed for almost a year thanks to the lockdowns and strict mask regulations.
When we opened back up, many of our regulars had passed, no longer wanted to go out or found different things to do with their weekend. But we still have a good core crowd to this day.
As I DJ my final night after almost 10 years inside the Holiday Inn, I ask everyone to remember this:
There is only one Club Impulse
in NE Ohio. It is the Studio 54 of Cleveland. (Not in ALL ways, just the good ones 😉) Many great nightspots have faded away over time - The Mining Company, the Cosmopolitan, Club Coconuts and others. As I leave Ohio for Florida, I’d love for you to keep Impulse’s star shining bright! If you haven’t come out in a while , come back tonight and celebrate with me. And then keep coming back! DJ George McClure will keep the party going and the spirit of Impulse alive!
By the way, that woman I met at Impulse back in 2004? She is now my amazing wife.
Tonight is not a farewell. It’s a “goodbye for now”. I expect to see everyone of you tonight and in the future when I come HOME to visit.
Much love,
DJ Greg Mack
