Hurley is home to the Famous Silver Street and anyone who’s ever visited, or even just heard of Hurley, knows what the thoroughfare’s claim to fame is
. I believe this one stretch of road has the most bars in a certain number of city blocks in the state of Wisconsin. Maybe even in the country. However, serving alcohol isn’t the only thing they boast. Several of these bars —
are better known for the high number of strippers they employ. Hurley, Wisconsin is on the Montreal River, just over the state line from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. They bill themselves as "where 51 ends and the fun begins," meaning Highway 51, and they're known for mining, their Little Finland area, and for being a hangout of Al Capone, John Dillinger, and Baby Face Nelson in the 1920s. Hurley, Wisconsin, is a fairly placid place with a tourism-based economy. But it has nearly 30 bars, a rather unusual number for a town of 2,000. That's the only tip-off to Hurley's notorious past, unequaled in all the north woods. Snowmobilers love Hurley because it's so snowy, so friendly, and so handy. Snowgoer magazine consistently rates it "best nightlife in the Midwest." The entire downtown is virtually on trail because the snowmobile trail is on the old railroad right of way. The railroad made Hurley boom in 1885 by connecting it with Ashland, Wisconsin, and its ore docks. The tracks ran right behind the north side of Silver Street.
