Some buildings are more than brick and mortar.
They become part of a town’s memory.
Long before Citizens was Citizens, this was the bank.
The place where people deposited paychecks from their first jobs. Where farmers came in after long days in the field. Where families signed papers for homes, land, businesses, and futures they hoped would last for generations.
For decades, people walked through these doors carrying dreams.
Some walked in nervous.
Some walked out relieved.
Some probably stood right where you’re standing now and had no idea how much their lives were about to change.
These walls have seen a lot of life.
They’ve witnessed the growth of Hempstead, the changing of generations, and thousands of ordinary moments that became part of this town’s story.
When the opportunity came to bring this building back to life, we knew we weren’t just opening a restaurant.
We were becoming caretakers of a piece of Hempstead history.
A place that once gathered people around possibility now gathers people around coffee, meals, wine, conversation, and community.
Different purpose.
Same heartbeat.
Because at its core, this building has always been about people.
That’s why you’ll find reminders of Hempstead throughout Citizens in the photographs, the artwork, the stories, menu items, and the conversations happening across tables every day.
We believe places like this matter.
Not because of what they were.
But because of everything they’ve survived.
The generations they’ve served.
The stories they’ve held.
The people who’ve walked through their doors carrying hopes for a better tomorrow.
This building has been part of Hempstead through seasons of growth, challenge, change, and renewal.
And somehow, after all these years, it’s still doing what it’s always done.
Bringing people together.
We’re grateful for everyone who helped write the chapters that came before us.
And we’re honored to help write the next one.
If you remember this building before it became Citizens, we’d love to hear your memories.
