VER has been a day-one force in Durham’s scene… showing up, throwing down, and lifting up everyone around her. A Black queer DJ and producer with a Scorpio’s intensity, Ver has built a reputation for high-energy, expressive sets that are as transformative as they are seductive. Her sound blends fresh unreleased finds and self-productions with timeless classics, always delivered with flavor, confidence, and heart. In a city full of talent, she’s carved her own lane while championing community, and honoring her Midwest roots from Detroit.

Introducing for the very first time Raleigh’s own DJ DEYON, who is going b2b with Sex Party! We can’t wait to watch this dynamic duo experiment on the decks… you never know where the night will take you, but we know it’s gonna be unforgettable! 🔥

Just under two years into DJing and already making waves across the Triangle. DJ Deyon, a Raleigh native, curates the sound you don’t even know you need. You’ll catch him on Glenwood and dance floors all over the Raleigh-Durham area, quietly becoming one of the Triangle’s names to know.

Dewan is a Durham native, most known for his prior electronic sets (techno and jungle, to name a few), which makes this Southern club focused set a very special treat! We are excited to hear what these boys have to bring to the table… we just KNOW it’s gonna be a good time 🔥🔊

We are very excited to partner with Stagville Descendants Council to uplift the history of Stagville and their descendant-led efforts that ensure history is not only remembered, but preserved in a way that both centers and benefits direct descendants of the enslaved at Stagville.

Stagville was a part of the largest plantation complex in North Carolina, and one of the largest in the South. Despite this history, Stagville along with the Bennehan and Cameron family names remain next to unrecognized, even though these families played a major role in the construction and development of North Carolina, whether it was using enslaved workers to build our rail roads, serving in our Supreme Court, or playing a key role in the development of UNC Chapel Hill, through which the specifics remain intentionally nebulous.

SDC works to hold institutional powers to account while preserving the narratives and legacy of the descendants of Stagville, many of whom have gone on to make historic contributions in their own right! Our very own Mrs. Beverly Evans (of the SDC Executive Board) was selected for and completed a special NASA training program to fly teachers to outer space!

It is important to remember that not only is this living history, this is a movement YOU have the opportunity to support! One of the best ways you can give your support is through offering your time and energy as a volunteer with SDC, which is uniquely one of the first and ONLY descendant-led organizations in the United States (est. 1997). This movement is growing, and it needs to support of young people like you to carry it forward.

Additionally, Stagville State Historic Site does regular guided tours that we encourage you to partake in. Historic Stagville is one of the few historic plantation sites that is both incredibly well preserved and structured in a way that truly contends with the history of the site while also centering the stories and experiences of the enslaved.

We are so excited to have DJ SOL joining us for the first time THIS FRIDAY for our Juneteenth Celebration of Southern Club music! She’ll be sharing the decks with none other than Sonic Essence co-founder & local tastemaker Ver!

Sol is a Durham, NC based multi-instrumentalist with a keen ear for movement-inspiring music. She prioritizes spotlighting diverse sounds spanning the Black diaspora, from Ampiano to Ghetto Tech to Baile Funk, and everything in between.

Sol acknowledges the dance floor as a sacred space, and understands music as a means of facilitating liberation, healing, and community. In reverence of this understanding, Sol’s approach to soundscape creation centers freedom, creative expression, and human connection wrapped in feverish rhythm and bass and playful vocals that are guaranteed to move you.

Through music, Sol strives to create a transformative experience that is immersive, embodied, and transcendent by cultivating a sonic environment that inspires listeners to shed their inhibitions and embrace their interconnectedness.

📝 Class is in session… freedom of expression, freedom of movement, and freedom to gather have never been free. This was the inspiration for DIRTY SOUTH, our celebration of Southern club music happening at Pinhook on Juneteenth!

We have lovingly prepared for you all a jumping off point to dig into the various interconnected histories within southern club music, a sonic tradition that is deeply influential to other genres we elevate in our work. For example, Detroit Ghettotech would not exist without Miami Bass! 🔊

It’s important to understand how all of these traditions are in communication with one another, so that we can honor them properly when engaging with the music. It’s also important to give weight to the true influence and cultural impact of Southern club music, to prevent the erasure and cultural extraction of the communities that built every facet of it from the start, and continue to carry this tradition forward (as evidenced by our song selection for this post).

Don’t let your learning stop here! 🚨 Please continue to seek knowledge directly from the source, while we still have the opportunity to be in direct conversation with the pioneers that built these genres.
