The song was released in August 1982 as the third single from Duran Duran's second studio album, Rio. It reached No. 1 in France, No. 2 in the UK and Ireland, No. 4 in Canada, and No. 16 in the USA (Billboard Hot 100).
While the song was a massive success in Europe upon its original release, it wasn't actually issued as a single in the United States until early 1985, when an edited live version was released to promote their Arena live album. The track's visually stunning, MTV-defining music video was shot on location in Sri Lanka alongside the video for "Hungry Like the Wolf".

On this day in 1984, the Eurogliders LP “This Island” debuted on the Australian charts (May 28)

The Western Australian band’s second studio LP was released after a changing of record labels (Polygram to CBS) and bass players (Geoff Rosenberg, to Scott Saunders, and finally to Ron François, formerly of the Teardrop Explodes and Lene Lovich)

The album, featuring the hit single, "Heaven (Must Be There)", peaked at #4 in Australia, and #-40 in the US.

And of course, Eurogliders were still going strong until the untimely passing of Bernie Lynch in March this year…

Released on May 27, 1982, “Hot in the City” marked Billy Idol’s breakout as a solo artist, serving as the lead single from his self-titled debut album. The song’s energetic blend of rock, new wave, and dance-pop elements, coupled with Idol’s distinctive vocals, captured the vibrant and gritty essence of early ’80s New York City. 

Originally penned during Idol’s transition from the UK punk scene to the American music landscape, “Hot in the City” was produced by Keith Forsey. The track’s infectious rhythm and urban flair resonated with audiences, propelling it to #23 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #58 on the UK Singles Chart. A remixed version released in 1987 saw renewed success, peaking at #13 in the UK.

Written by frontman Bryan Ferry, the new wave classic notably became the legendary English band's final Top 10 single in the UK, and it later gained a massive cultural resurgence when Bill Murray memorably performed it during a karaoke scene in the acclaimed 2003 film Lost in Translation.

On this day in 1985, Wham!’s “Everything She Wants” hit No. 1 in the U.S., making Wham! the first group since the Bee Gees to score three No. 1 singles from the same album, Make It Big. The song joined “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Careless Whisper” at the top of the charts.

George Michael wrote, produced, and performed most of the instruments on the track himself.
