Some things on Daufuskie happen slowly — like indigo dye settling into fabric, or two people building something side by side.
Daufuskie Blues unfolded just that way. A sisterhood formed with hands in blue, practicing indigo dyeing together on each other’s porches — learning, experimenting, and letting time do what it does best on this island.
When we asked what Daufuskie Time means to them, Rhonda said,
“To slow down and breathe.”
Leanne smiled and added,
“When you let your shoulders drop.”
From an honor-system rack on Rhonda’s front porch and Leanne selling pieces off the back of her golf cart, nearly a decade later Daufuskie Blues has become a creative and cultural gathering place — showcasing in beautiful fashion the rich Sea Island heritage of indigo dye.
Indigo runs deep in the Lowcountry — once cultivated on islands like Daufuskie and shaped by generations of skilled hands. Today, that same deep blue lives on in their studio inside the historic Mary Field School.
They spoke of how much the Daufuskie community means to them, saying they had never experienced such a deeply rooted sense of belonging before. When they made the move to open their studio, the support was overwhelming — laughing that many islanders’ family members found Daufuskie Blues scarves under the tree that year.
They continue to dedicate time and travel to study with mentors and pioneers in the field of indigo and natural dye — honoring both tradition and innovation in their work.
When they find a moment of Daufuskie Time for themselves, they admit they’re often happiest right where they are — in the studio — immersed in color, craft, and conversation, embracing the spirit of stepping back in time that’s woven into this island.
And when they step out for a break, they enjoy dining at the Distillery — a favorite spot to send visitors for lunch, appreciating not only how good the food tastes, but how thoughtfully it’s presented.
This is Daufuskie Time in color.
