In 1989, I was just finishing work in Chicago as gm of the Chicago Repertory Dance Ensemble, before moving to manage Ballet Chicago. We were offered free tix to American Ballet Theatre’s Chicago premiere of In the Upper Room by Twyla Tharp at the Civic Opera House. I was stunned by the mysterious rapture of this 39 minute dance. It changed my life planting the seeds of Dance Chicago. Watch the entire 39 minutes. We still design all Dance Chicago lighting with the black, infinite upstage disappearing background. The “build” in this dance has never been duplicated, but always attempted.

Watch the entire dance please!

Dear Dance Chicago Artists:

You have asked “What’s going on with Dance Chicago?” Well, this is our 29th season and we are building new showcases to present your work to wider audiences. Our next three confirmed shows are Duke it Out! at Nichols Concert Hall, Evanston on 12/9/23 @ 10 am & 2 pm and Dances from the Heart at the Athenaeum Center in Chicago on 2/17/24 at 8 pm. Other shows are likely. We will reestablish our regular Main Stage November shows in 2024.

YOU NEED TO APPLY BY November 20
1. The application process allows us to curate showcases featuring the current state of Chicago choreography.
2. The application is free to past participants: it’s simple and easy. Go online at the link below to apply. NOTE: We are waiving the 2023 application fee if you performed previously in a Dance Chicago show.
3. We will make every effort to book you if you meet the November 20 application deadline.
4. Video links to your works are essential in placing you correctly, but if you don’t have them now, that’s okay, apply anyway. BTW - Studio rehearsal footage is just fine.

Apply here by November 20:

I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve been up to and booking those works in Dance Chicago showscases. We always welcome new voices and new work.

To power this process in 2024, we will be reinstating the Dance Chicago Choreographer of the Year Award.

Please forward this email to your support community and post to your sites to help spread the word.

Let’s keep moving….
