Huckleberries are a type of bramble, similar to blueberries but smaller and more tart. They are rarely cultivated commercially but are an important staple for all types of North American wildlife. In the early part of the 19th century the word was used as a synonym for something small, humble or tiny. Drawing from this early American slang Mark Twain named his character Huckleberry Finn as a way to establish him “of lower extraction or degree” than Tom Sawyer. Not long after the widely successful release of Twain’s controversial book, the meaning of the word huckleberry began to change. By 1900 it was being used as a way to express camaraderie—as a mark of affection towards one’s partner or as a way to identify oneself as a willing helper or assistant. To be someone’s huckleberry, as the saying now goes, is to be just the right person for the job. Happy Hour(S):
