💃🕺 August's Member Spotlight: Emily Nguyen!

✨ How long dancing?
A little over a year.

💑 How did you first get started? What made you try it?
I love dancing but I was nervous to come try swing because I didn’t have a partner. Then I saw a post on the Birmingham Reddit page from another girl who was nervous about coming without a partner so we came together and I just fell in love with the dance!

😊 What has kept you coming back?
I really enjoy learning more/getting better each week, as well as just the opportunity to dance! It brings me so much joy!

🌀 What’s your favorite move, style, or part of dancing?
The feeling I get when I’m just responding to my partner’s cues with muscle memory - it’s like flying! My brain is off and my body is moving and it’s absolute bliss!

😁What do you enjoy most about the Steel City Swing community
Everyone here is so welcoming and friendly, I’ve met so many great people. We carpool up to Huntsville to dance once a month and that has been really fun too!

🙋‍♀️What would you say to someone who’s nervous about coming to their first class?
I wish I had overcome my own nerves and started sooner! It can be intimidating to walk into class for the first time but it is not scary at all once you’re here!

⛳ What do you do outside of dancing? (job, hobbies, etc.)
I work in regulatory compliance for a local bank and bartend part time at La Gran Riviera in Pelham, as well as at the Birmingham Bulls hockey games, so I stay pretty busy.

🤯Fun fact about you (something people might not know)?
I had scoliosis as a child and had to have a spinal fusion, so my back does not bend in the middle. I was nervous that this would impact my ability to dance but it hasn’t really been a problem!
