In remembrance of the late Dolly Parton, we’ll be playing one of her best albums. This album features the title track “9 to 5,” which topped both the country and pop charts. The track was as an anthem of empowerment for working women.

Thursday: Automatic for The People – R.E.M.

Automatic for the People is one of the finest, most moving records of the 1990s. The album marks a massive evolution for the band as they matured from high-energy college rock for dark, orchestral reflections on mortality, aging, and grief. Each song stands distinctly on its own, seamlessly blending Michael Stipe’s poetic lyricism with subtle arrangements written by Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones.

Wednesday: Freedom Flight – Shuggie Ottis

Shuggie Ottis wrote, recorded, and produced Freedom Flight (his second album) all while being just 17 years old. He plays almost all the instruments on the album except for drums on a song or two. His instrumental talent is amazing, but what really shines is his amazing songwriting. “Strawberry Letter 23” is the crown jewel of this project. Despite The Brothers Johnson’s cover of the song getting lots of radio play, the rest of the album has gone largely unnoticed.

Thursday: Histoire de Melody Nelson – Serge Gainsbourg

Among Serge Gainsbourg’s extensive discography and career, “Histoire de Melody Nelson” shines as his magnum opus. The lavish orchestrations are paired with a great use of space and tone. Even though it is a very orchestral album, the most prominent sounds are the bass, drums, and guitar, which lay down an amazing rhythmic bed for Gainsbourg’s poetry.

Friday: Grace – Jeff Buckley

In celebration of the album’s release 32nd anniversary, we will be playing Grace at full volume in the lounge. Although Buckley only ever made one full length album, it remains one of the best of the 1990’s. Since its release, Grace has only become more and more culturally relevant. Jeff’s songwriting is superb, but what really shines is his voice.

Saturday: good kid, m.A.A.d city – Kendrick Lamar

Arguably Kendrick’s best work, and definitely one of his most commercial, “Good Kid, mAAd City” is a testament to masterful Hip Hop storytelling. Telling stories of growing up in Compton, Kendrick reflects on his childhood and the environment that shaped him. This isn’t just a concept album; it’s its own story.

Sunday: Surfs Up – Beach Boys

Coming off the rollercoaster journey of the 1960’s, The Beach Boys were struggling to redefine their identity. Their visionary, Brian Wilson, had poured his soul into their last two projects: Pet Sounds and Smile. The former being considered arguably the best album of all time and the latter being considered the best album that never was. Surfs Up has some of the most vulnerable and beautiful songs of Brian Wilson’s career.
