Chaloner's Cigar House History Spotlight: LAURA CHALONER

Upon the death of Charles A. Chaloner in 1906, the operations of the store passed to two of his children, William H. and Laura L. Chaloner. There is little recorded history of either of these entrepreneurs, but several sources identify Laura as one of Adrian’s most highly respected and well-known businesswomen at the turn of the 20th century.

The local paper published an article after her death that stated, “Miss Chaloner probably had the widest acquaintance of any woman in the city through her long association with the public newsstand. With charming dignity and yet sincere friendliness she waited on customers for many years.”

Laura began working for her father in 1893 when she was 25-years-old and remained a vital part of the operation of the store throughout the majority of her life. She was the sole proprietor for at least three years following the death of her brother, William H. and before her nephew, Bill and his wife Mildred became the owners in 1939. One year later, an unknown illness prompted her retirement at 72-years-old.
