Sunflowers, first grown in North America over 5.000 years ago, have been the subject of many pieces of art, paintings, music (and cocktails 😊). Their scientific name is Helianthus which comes from Greek words for sun (helios) and flower (anthos). Vincent Van Gogh, after practicing with different flowers, chose a specific variety: sunflowers. He wanted to be known as “the painter of sunflowers”. He gave sunflowers the lead role in several paintings. After he died, friends brought sunflowers with them to his funeral. Sunflowers became synonymous with Vincent, just as he had hoped. 🌻

Native from tropical Asia, Butterfly Pea is an amazing wildflower. It is called “Butterfly Pea” because the banner looks like a butterfly. Surprisingly, it is not frequented by butterflies. Butterfly pea’s flowers are also used to make an infusion or herbal tea. Butterfly pea is also a plant used in Ayurvedic medicine to improve mental health. Enjoy the cocktail and don’t forget that the nice flowers are also edible! 🦋

The Angora Rabbit which is one of the oldest types of domestic rabbits. Of all the rabbit breeds in the world, the Angora breeds are among the most distinctive, thanks to their beautiful, flowing wool. The iconic long coat of the Angora is the result of a special rabbit gene! Supposedly the Angora rabbits of today descend from a type of Turkish rabbits bred for its fine wool. There, the breed was allegedly first mentioned in an encyclopedia in 1765, and quickly became popular with the aristocracy in France. Today, Angoras are prized by fiber artists and rabbit enthusiasts!

The Flying Squid is an invertebrate, and is a relative of the octopus. Native to the northern Pacific Ocean (specifically the Pacific Ocean near the coastal regions of China, Korea, Japan), a flying squid has a large head and eight legs with suckers on them. The flying squid uses a siphon for jet propulsion to propel itself above the water surface, and then use the fins to glide. It can remain airborne for about three or more seconds, and in this much span of time, they are able to cover around 9 meters in just one flight!

Having a history of over 1200 years, Yuzu is a citrus fruit and plant from China in the Yangtze River Region. Yuzu is often used in Japanese and Korean cuisine. It appears much like a lemon but tastes more like a floral lime. Yuzu is rarely eaten as a fruit, though in Japanese cuisine its aromatic zest is used to garnish some dishes and its juice is used as a seasoning. Yuzuyu is the name of a custom of bathing hot yuzu on winter solstice in Japan that started in the 18th century and still exists today. Yuzuyu has a long tradition and believed to ward off winter colds and flu. Not the same thing as a hot Yuzu bath for sure 😊, but our Yuzu Cocktail is strongly recommended to enjoy the pleasant Yuzu aroma!

Goliath Tigerfish, a native species of Africa, has a fierce appearance and an even fiercer reputation. They take a chunk out of the fishermen who try to catch them, and they’re surrounded by evil myths. Goliath Tigerfish is one of the most scary animals ever discovered! These African fish are found in many rivers and lakes on the continent and are fierce predators with distinctive, proportionally large teeth. “Goliath” refers to the giant from the story of David and Goliath. When your name is Goliath, you'd better be one ferocious creature and the Goliath tigerfish definitely lives up to its moniker. They can grow to the size of a small human (70kg). They can snap their prey in half with a single bite. Goliath Tigerfish is the first freshwater fish recorded and confirmed to attack and catch birds in mid-flight!

T. rex, the species Tyrannosaurus rex, was built to rule. It was one of the most ferocious predators to ever walk the Earth. With a massive body, sharp teeth, and jaws so powerful they could crush a car, this famous carnivore dominated North America 68 million years ago. “Tyrannosaurus” is Greek for “tyrant lizard,” and “rex” means “king” in Latin. So, Tyrannosaurus rex was “King of the Tyrant Lizards”. The original "Jurassic Park" movie hit the big screen more than 25 years ago. But even now, a mention of the T. rex brings to mind the monster that roars like a lion in that film.

Neanderthal is a member of a group of archaic humans who emerged at least 200,000 years ago. Neanderthals were replaced or assimilated by early modern human populations (Homo sapiens) between 35,000 and perhaps 24,000 years ago. The name Neanderthal derives from the Neander Valley (German Neander Thal or Neander Tal) in Germany, where the fossils were first found. Recently, it was reported that Eurasians generally carry about 2 percent Neanderthal nuclear DNA, which suggests that modern humans and Neanderthals interbred and thus were not two different biological species, despite most classifications treating them as such!

A honey bee a flying insect which is native to Eurasia. The honey bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by man. There are three kinds of bees in a hive: i. Queen, ii. Worker (Female) and ii. Drone (Male). Only the Queen in the hive lays eggs (up to 1.500 eggs per day) and she is fed by royal jelly, produced by worker bees. The male bees in the hive are called drones. Their job in the hive is to find a queen to mate with. They die after mating (poor things!). Workers perform the following tasks outside the hive as field bees: Gathering nectar and pollen from flowers and collecting water. Worker bees communicate through “waggle dance”, a special bee dance to tell friends where the high quality flowers are 😊.

The Tasmanian Devil is the world's largest carnivorous marsupial. Its oversize head houses sharp teeth and strong, muscular jaws that can deliver one of the most powerful bites of any mammal. Once abundant throughout Australia, Tasmanian devils are now found only on the island state of Tasmania. Tasmanian devils have a reputation for flying into a rage when threatened by a predator, fighting for a mate, or defending a meal. These behaviors also inspired the Looney Tunes portrayal of Taz, the Tasmanian Devil, as a snarling lunatic! The phrase “Tasmanian Devil” immediately brings about childhood images of Looney Tunes but Taz, the cartoon character, neither looks nor acts particularly like a real Tasmanian Devil. Sorry kids, we don’t mean to hurt you ☹

Tazmanya Canavarı, dünyanın bilinen en büyük etçil keseli hayvanıdır. Kocaman kafaları, keskin dişleri ve kaslı çeneleri sayesinde tüm memeliler arasında dahi ısırdığında en büyük tahribatı oluşturan canlılardandır. Bir zamanlar Avusturalya’da çokca bulunan Tazmanya Canavarı, bugün sadece bir ada devleti olan Tazmanya’da yaşamaktadır. Tazmanya Canavarı bir avcı ile karşılaştığında, bir dişi veya avı için mücadele içerisine girdiğinde aniden öfke nöbetleri geçirir. Bu çılgın özellikleri ile Looney Tunes’un ünlü çizgi film karakteri “Taz” için de ilham kaynağı olmuştur. Bugün “Tazmanya Canavarı” ismi, duyan herkese çocukluk anıları ile birlikte Taz’ı hatırlatsa da, gerçek Tazmanya Canavarı ne görüntüsü ne de davranışları itibariyle bu sevimli karaktere pek benzememektedir. Sizi üzdüğümüz için kusura bakmayın çocuklar ☹

Octopuses are fascinating invertebrates, they can analyze situations and solve problems that they encounter. The Dumbo Octopus is named after Disney’s Dumbo, the elephant character from the eponymous movie, that was famous for its big ears. Of all the fascinating sea creatures known to man, Dumbo Octopuses are one of the cutest and rarest sea creatures discovered so far. Known to inhabit the oceans at a depth of 4.000m (where there is no sunlight!), Dumbo Octopuses are the deepest living known octopuses. Another fun fact about Dumbo Octopuses is that they have three hearts (this may be the reason why they are so lovely!) 😊.

The yellow-billed stork sometimes also called the Mycteria Ibis is a large African wading stork species. It is widespread in regions south of the Sahara and also occurs in Madagascar. They spend their days feeding or resting. They move slow and deliberately as they hunt for food in shallow water. They have a very fast muscle reflex in their necks that allows them to catch their prey in the water while moving. They also have been recorded as snapping their bills shut in just 0.025 seconds, a definite advantage in water hunting!

Sarı gagalı leylek, Afrika’ya özgü bir dalıcı kuş türüdür. Bu tür, ağırlıklı olarak Sahra Çölü'nde ve Madagaskar’da yaşamaktadır. Genel olarak zamanlarını beslenme ve dinlemeye ayırırlar. Avlanacakları zaman çok yavaş hareket edebilirler, sığ sularda bu sayede dikkat çekmemeyi başarırlar. Özellikle boyunlarında çok özel kas refleksleri bulunmaktadır. Boyunlarını o kadar hızlı hareket ettirebilmektedirler ki, bu sayede avlarını hareket ederken dahi yakalayabilirler. Avlanma esnasında gagalarını 0.025 saniyede kapatabildikleri kaydedilmiştir, bu performans suda avlanmak için çok önemli bir rekabet avantajı yaratmaktadır!
