There's just something enchanting about rum. It's got a reputation as the drink of pirates, planters, and pioneers. Zoe Cocktail Bar proudly boasts a sprawling collection of rums from around the globe. Naturally, we decided to indulge in a tasting session.
I must say, the runner-up in our little rum adventure was the Diplomático Rum from Venezuela. Its aroma is a heady mix of toffee, vanilla, and dried fruits. Honestly, you could sit there sniffing it and feel like you're enjoying a dessert. When you finally take a sip, you're greeted with a gentle, natural sweetness – think ripe bananas – followed by a robust oak flavour. Much like a fine whisky, I suspect the Diplomático has spent some quality time aging in a barrel.
But the champion of the evening, by a whisker, was the Dictador from Colombia. This rum packs a punch! Bring the glass to your nose and you're hit with rich scents of mature figs, raisins, and dark fruits. Take a sip and you're treated to a bold blend of dark roast coffee, mocha, and a hint of chocolate. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you're a fan of dark chocolate and Italian espresso, this rum is a revelation.
Just thinking about it makes me eager to return for more rum adventures.
