The little bar that could.
I suppose it’s not a surprise that we aren’t celebrating its closure. We forgot to celebrate its anniversaries pretty much every year over the last 11 years.
I don’t need to say much. We were always an understated spot. But I know that we created the kind of place people are going to miss. When they walk through the underground tunnel, they’ll notice. A little less classic rock in the walkway, a little less scruffy signage, a little less smell of deep-fried tater tots.
There have been so many people that helped make Mermaid what it was. Our bartenders, regulars, and the drunk person I got in an argument with during one Thanksgiving.
But only one person made Mermaid the most Mermaid it could ever be.
Thanks for everything, Kelly.
It was a warm little hug of a bar.
And that’s a lot, coming from someone who hates hugs.
Our last day is this Friday, November 14. Come say goodbye to my dream of Singapore’s greatest little commuter bar.
